Sailfish Volleyball Makes Quick Work of Ave Maria

AVE MARIA, Fla.- Playing for the second time in as many nights, the Palm Beach Atlantic University volleyball team earned a 3-0 win over Ave Maria University on Tuesday evening as they now have only one regular season contest remaining in the 2010 season. The Fish utilized a balanced effort from all positions against the Gyrenes as the Blue and White improved to 21-8 on the season.

After polishing off a pair of dominating wins in the first two sets with 25-14 and 25-11 victories, the Sailfish withstood a strong AMU effort in set three as the Sailfish held on for a 26-24 game three win.

Junior Janeen McCormick led the Sailfish hitting efforts for the second consecutive match with 11 kills and a strong .450 hitting percentage. McCormick wasn’t alone however in the strong showings for PBA hitters as freshman Christina Alessi and sophomore Mariela Quesada each contributed nine kills in the match.

Alessi proved dominant with her strong left-hand as she tallied nine kills in only 12 total attacks for a spectacular .583 hitting percentage. Quesada came in at .375 while the team produced a respectable .291 overall team hitting percentage for the match.

Leading the defensive charge was senior Jennifer Eldridge who came away with a match-high 15 digs while junior Allie Warren chipped in with 12 digs.

Jessica Way added 24 assists in the win while backup setter Rachel Lawrence added seven assists and six digs off the bench.

The Gyrenes (4-23) were led by setter Megan Arago with a double-double performance of 20 assists and 12 digs while Christianne Ludwick and Haley Wonka were the top AMU hitters at nine and eight kills respectively.

Palm Beach Atlantic will conclude their regular season contests on Saturday, November 13th as they will take on Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida at 4 pm.
