Fish Rebound Nicely at Pepsi Bash at the Beach Tournament with Saturday Sweep

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- After a tough opener on Friday night to a solid Flagler College team, the Palm Beach Atlantic University volleyball team came away with a pair of 3-0 sweeps on Saturday as they got back to the basics in downing Southern New Hampshire University and Bentley University, both visiting teams that call the Northeast-10 Conference home.

Palm Beach Atlantic (14-3) opened up the morning with a match against Southern New Hampshire University as the Sailfish stumbled early on with a 25-23 loss in the opening game only to come back for three straight victories to tally the 3-1 win. The Fish fought back with 25-12, 25-15, and 25-15 victories.

After enjoying a few hours of rest, the Fish went back to work against Bentley University in the 1:30 p.m. matchup as the Falcons presented a tough challenge which although only went three games was a tight match throughout.

In the end however, the Sailfish would prove too strong as PBA carried through with 25-19, 25-23, and 25-22 victories.

Against SNHU, Palm Beach Atlantic utilized a balanced attack with senior Jennifer Eldridge leading the team with 11 kills while the squad produced a .280 hitting percentage. Freshman Christina Alessi produced her first of two excellent performances on the day with nine kills and only one hitting error in the opener while hitting a terrific .571 overall.

Junior Janeen McCormick and freshman Paige Mitchell both came away with +.500 attacking performances as well as McCormick drilled eight kills while Mitchell added in seven kills.

Junior Allie Warren led the way defensively once again for the Fish with a match-high 19 digs while Eldridge posted a double-double with 12 digs in addition to her 11 kills. Jessica Way, who was named to the Bash at the Beach All-Tournament Team, produced 40 assists in the victory as she continues to be a rock from the setter position for head coach Bob White.

In their matchup with Bentley, Way came away with another solid performance as she passed out 36 assists while adding in seven defensive digs and six kills. Warren once again displayed excellent defense with 15 digs to lead the team while fellow Stuart, Florida native Jessie Kubiak chipped in with 11 digs off the bench.

Alessi proved dominant at times with 11 kills to lead the team while hitting at a clip of .474 while Eldridge managed nine kills. PBA out-blocked their opponent by a 12-2 mark including four block assists from McCormick.

The Fish wrapped up their busy weekend of volleyball with a 2-1 mark which now brings their season record to 13-3. Palm Beach Atlantic won 12 total matches in 2009.

They will now turn their attention to welcoming in Barry University on Wednesday, October 13th for a 7 pm match at the Rubin Arena.
