PBA Volleyball Drops Two Matches to Conclude Pacer Invitational

Box Score

AIKEN, S.C.- After two tight wins yesterday versus a pair of Peachbelt Conference foes at the Pacer Invitational, the Palm Beach Atlantic University volleyball team came out on the other side on Saturday as they fell 3-2 to Augusta State University and 3-0 to the University of Montevallo. The Sailfish head back to South Florida with a solid 17-7 overall season record.

In the opening match versus ASU the two teams went back and forth throughout all five sets with the fifth and deciding set even needing extra time as ASU eventually came out victorious with a 21-19 win. The previous four games saw the teams alternate victories with ASU coming out on top 25-23 in the opener followed by a PBA win at number two with a 25-21.

Augusta State climbed back in the driver’s seat with a 27-25 win in set three followed by a PBA victory of 25-21 in the fourth set to force the extra game.

After three difficult matches in a 24-hour span including two that went five sets, the Fish appeared to have little left in terms of physical and mental energy when taking on a strong Montevallo squad. After a tight loss in the opener with UM coming out ahead 27-25, the Falcons came out with more dominating 25-11 and 25-15 wins to close out the match.

In the opening five-set thriller versus ASU, senior Jennifer Eldridge would lead the way with a season-high of 19 kills while coming through with 68 total attacks (.208 attacking percentage). Also reaching double-figures in the match for kills were freshman Christina Alessi with 14 kills and junior Lanae Robinson with 11 kills. Alessi and Robinson were also strong as a blocking duo with Robinson producing 10 block assists and Alessi adding in nine block assists.

Setter Jessica Way came away with a fantastic all-around performance as she dished out 53 assists while also producing 24 digs and four service aces.

Junior Allie Warren led all PBA players in digs as the Martin County High School product came away with 28 digs while Jessie Kubiak added in 16 digs.

After a strong eight kill, 14 dig performance in the opener, senior Kristin Carroll would step up her game even more against Montevallo as she led all PBA players with nine kills and no hitting errors while producing a .474 hitting percentage.

Eldridge led all Sailfish players versus UM in digs with 12 while Way would dish out 27 assists in the loss.

PBA will return home and begin preparations for a pair of home matches next week. First the Sailfish will take on Florida Memorial University on Tuesday, October 26th at 7 pm, a match that was originally scheduled for Wednesday evening. Then the Fish will welcome in Eckerd College on Friday, October 29th for another 7 pm match at the Rubin Arena.
