Palm Beach Atlantic Closes Out Sharks Classic With Third Straight Victory

DAVIE, Fla.- After a narrow defeat against Michigan Tech University in the Sharks Classic opener on Friday morning, the Palm Beach Atlantic University volleyball team re-grouped and stormed back with three straight victories to close out the tournament in impressive fashion. After a 3-0 sweep of Henderson State University on Saturday morning, the Fish came away with a 3-1 win over Winona State University on Saturday afternoon.

With the victory, the Sailfish improve to 4-2 on the young season as they battled to 25-18, 23-25, 25-21, and 25-17 scores. After dropping game number two, the Fish more than responded, they dominated with a .289 hitting percentage in game three followed by a 10-0 lead to start game four before closing out the match.

Junior Kristin Carroll put forth her best effort of the young season with a career-high 15 kills (.262 hitting percentage) while adding in five digs, two block assists, and a service ace. Senior Jennifer Eldridge didn’t have as dominating an effort at the net as in previous games of the tournament with only six kills against WSU, but did find other ways to positively contribute with 18 digs and two total blocks (one solo, one assist).

After struggling a bit over her past few games and spending a considerable time on the sideline, sophomore Lanae Robinson returned to form with 13 kills (.219 hitting percentage) to aid the Sailfish offensive attack. Fellow sophomore Lauren Villarreal also posted a solid performances with nine kills (.179 hitting percentage).

Adding to the defensive efforts of the Fish was freshman Kristina Harter who made her collegiate debut this weekend into a memorable one with 10 digs in the winning effort. Sophomore setter Jessica Way continued her solid work as well with 44 assists, seven digs, and a team-high three aces.

The Warriors were led by Lauren Brown with 10 kills while Carmen Stankowski posted nine kills. Katie Matel and Victoria Weatherly added in 24 and 16 assists respectively while Shannon McGowan played well from the libero position with 24 digs and four service aces.

PBA will take the remainder of the holiday weekend off before returning to the court on Tuesday evening for a 6 p.m. showdown with Rollins College in the Rubin Arena.
