Sailfish Fall Short Again On the Road At Saint Leo

Box Score

Saint Leo, Fla.- Hitting the road for a two-match swing versus Saint Leo University on Thursday night and then off to Daytona to face off against Embry-Riddle on Friday evening, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s volleyball team stumbled in their first attempt with a 2-3 loss to the Lions.

Using a balanced offensive attack, the Fish had four players reach double-digit kill totals but were still left with their second straight 2-3 defeat after falling to Rollins College earlier in the week by a similar score.

The Fish dropped the opening game 30-32 before fighting back for a 30-24 victory in game number two to knot things up. The Lions and Sailfish would once again trade victories in games three and four as Saint Leo won 30-27 before PBA took game number four by a 30-28 count. In the end, the Lions would prevail as they took the match with a 15-10 victory in game number five.

Named the NCAA Independents Setter of the Week for last week, PBA junior Emily Ryerson (Winter Springs, Fla./Winter Springs HS) once again put together a solid night by totaling 48 assists while also adding in three aces and assisting on eight blocks to aide the Sailfish front-line defense.

Brittany Erickson (La Mesa, Calif.), the NCAA Independent National Player of the Week this past week as well, added 11 kills and 18 digs in the loss while seniors Bia Santos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Ali Mitchell (West Palm Beach, Fla./Royal Palm HS) chipped in 15 and 14 kills respectively. Erickson and Santos both assisted on seven blocks apiece.

PBA next takes on Emrby-Riddle University on Friday when they travel to Daytona, Florida for a matchup with the Eagles. PBA defeated ERAU back on August 28th in the Sailfish home opener by a score of 3-0. The Eagles and Sailfish should be well familiar with each other as Embry-Riddle also took part in the 2007 Pepsi Bash at the Beach Volleyball Tournament that took place last weekend on PBA’s campus.
