Box Score West Palm Beach, Fla.- Jumping out to sizeable leads in each game, the Eckerd College volleyball team was able to ride their early scoring to a 3-0 match victory against Palm Beach Atlantic University on Wednesday night in front of a solid Rubin Arena crowd.
Faced with the daunting task of playing behind, the Sailfish never seemed to really get things going as they dropped games one and two by the scores of 20-30 and 21-30 before taking game three into extras with a 32-34 loss at the hands of the Tritons.
Now 13-5 on the season, the Tritons continued their solid season while PBA slumped to an 11-11 overall record with the defeat.
Junior Brittany Erickson (La Mesa, Calif.) was the only PBA attacker with double-digit kills against EC as she posted 12 kills and added in 10 digs on the night. Freshman Kristin Carroll (Billings, Mont.) was next in line as she registered eight kills.
Junior setter Emily Ryerson (Winter Springs, Fla./Winter Springs HS) notched 31 assists in the loss while chipping in eight digs. Senior Bia Santos (Sau Paulo, Brazil) collected 10 defensive digs while also adding seven blocking assists.
Palm Beach Gardens, Florida native Lydee Benoit performed well in front of a solid showing of family and friends in the crowd as she paced the Tritons with 16 kills while also leading the squad with 17 digs. Shannon Ruby (Littleton, Colo.), Eckerd’s main option at setter, totaled 39 assists in helping aide the Tritons front-line.
The Sailfish continue with their recent home swing as they play host to St. Thomas University on Saturday, October 6th with a 5:00 p.m. start time scheduled.
