Brian McMahon

Bio Divider - PBA Highlights

Brian McMahon was named the head coach of the Palm Beach Atlantic men’s soccer program on February 11, 2014. He has led PBA to a winning record every year since taking control of the program. He has totaled 16 wins against ranked opponents in his tenure with the Sailfish. His time at PBA includes six consecutive bids to the NCAA Tournament with three SSC regular season titles (2017-18, 2021) and an SSC Tournament championship (2018). He became the first coach in 24 years to win SSC Coach of the year two consecutive years (2017-18). He is also a two-time recipient of the USC South Region Coach of the Year (2015, 2017). McMahon has a 103-23-11 (.792) record over his time at PBA and a 40-5-4 (.857) SSC record.

McMahon was elected to the United Soccer Coaches South Region Ranking Committee in 2017, and was promoted to the USC National Rankings Committee in 2021. He also serves on the NCAA DII National Soccer Championships Committee, the USCAA/NSCAA South Region Rankings Committee, the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee, and is the USCAA/NSCAA DII National Chair. McMahon led the Sailfish to 45 consecutive weeks (2016-21) ranked in the United Soccer Coaches Top-25 including 35 rankings in the Top-10 nationally and in the top-6 nationally six seasons in a row. The Sailfish have been led to the the NCAA Tournament for six straight seasons, the longest streak within the Sunshine State Conference.

The Sailfish captured their third SSC regular season championship in the 2021 season. PBA finished with a 13-3 record including three wins over ranked opponents. The Sailfish had their third SSC Player of the Year in Quenzi Huerman and had two other players make the first team in the SSC. Huerman and defender Michael Pahr were named the 10th and 11th All-Americans in McMahon's tenure. PBA was the highest-scoring offense in the conference (2.4 goals per game) and second in goals allowed (.75 goals per game).

The Sailfish made it to the finals of the SSC Tournament and to the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament in 2019. PBA defeated the defending national champions and had four players named All-South Region and had the SSC and South Region Player of the Year in Cadu Cusatis. Cusatis was also named an All-American by the United Soccer Coaches.

The 2018 season was incredibly successful one for McMahon and the Sailfish, as they finished the year 19-1-1 overall, a .929 winning percentage which was the highest in Division II. The 'Fish knocked off Barry twice during the season, who went on to win the National Championship. The Sailfish had three players named All-Americans, as Elliott Barker, Claudio Rivadeneira, and Juan Sanchez.  Sanchez was named a First Team All-American by both the D2CCA and the United Soccer Coaches.

During the 2017 season, the Sailfish had their most successful regular season in program history, as they finished 14-0-2 and were ranked as high as No. 2 nationally by the United Soccer Coaches. The Sailfish picked up huge road wins against Top-10 opponents during the seasons with wins over Lynn and Rollins. The 'Fish posted one of the most impressive defenses in the country in 2017, as they posted 13 shutouts on the year.  Charlie Dennis, Juan Sanchez, and Elliott Barker were all named All-Americans in 2017.

In his third season in charge of PBA men’s soccer, Coach McMahon led the Sailfish to their second consecutive NCAA Division II South Region championship game. The ‘Fish earned the top seed in the SSC tournament and hosted the event in their first season of eligibility.

McMahon coached Lucas Coutinho to his third and fourth All-America teams this year, as the senior was named to the NSCAA All-America second team and D2CCAA All-America Honorable Mention. Coutinho signed a professional contract with the New York Cosmos of the NASL. McMahon also helped senior defender Michael O’Sullivan earn a spot on the NSCAA All-South First Team, while also coaching him to a professional contract with the Jacksonville Armada FC.  Neil Slooves also joined Coutinho and O'Sullivan as he signed a professional contract with UMF Tindestoll of Iceland, becoming the third Sailfish senior from the 2016 team to sign professionally.

McMahon had two other Sailfish receive national attention in 2016, as incoming transfer Charlie Dennis was named to the NSCAA All-South Region team and the D2CCAA All-South Region Second team, while Lucas Kuscevic was named to both NSCAA and D2CCAA All-South Region second teams.

In his second season at the helm of the blue and white, McMahon smashed all expectations leading the Sailfish to a program-best 17 wins, a NCAA Division II South Region Championship, and led the Sailfish to an NCAA Elite Eight appearance. He had seven players named NCAA All-Americans with four named to the D2CCA All-American team, and three  named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-America Team. Coach McMahon was named the 2015 NSCAA South-Region Coach of the Year, and was also named the 2016 Palm Beach County Sports Commission Coach of the Year.

In his first season on the sideline for Palm Beach Atlantic, McMahon exceeded expectations and led the Sailfish to 12 wins, a National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) South Region championship, and a trip to the NCCAA Final Four. He had three individuals honored to the NCCAA All-American team, and saw junior Jermaine Metz named to the Daktronics All-Region second-team. Perhaps the greatest accomplishment of all, however, was PBA earning the National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association (NISOA) Sportsmanship Award.

Bio Divider - Prior to PBA

Coach McMahon has over 20 years of collegiate coaching and playing experience with a resume that includes coaching stints at Belhaven (Miss.) University and Greenville (Ill.) College.

McMahon spent two seasons leading Belhaven to back-to-back appearances in the NAIA National Tournament, reaching at least the Elite 8 in both campaigns. His first season was a memorable one as he helped guide the Blazers to their second-ever NAIA National Championship as his team finished 19-4-1 and defeated the University of Mobile 2-0 in the title match. His good work led him to being named the NSCAA and the NAIA National Coach of the Year.

The 2013 season saw the McMahon-led Blazers reach the round of eight at the NAIA National Tournament before losing to the eventual national champions, Martin Methodist College, by a 2-1 score in double overtime. The team finished 16-7-1 while extending their program’s streak of 49 straight polls of being ranked in the NAIA top-25 coaches poll.

Prior to leading the Blazers he spent 12 years as head coach of both the men’s and women’s programs at Greenville College. His tenure leading both the Panthers men’s and women’s soccer programs (2000-11) resulted in him becoming the all-time wins leader for both programs while his men’s team became the first sport at Greenville to reach the NCAA National Tournament, which he accomplished on three different occasions. His final five seasons leading the Panthers men’s program resulted in a record of 128-58-24 while his final three seasons in charge of the women’s team saw him tally a 72-30 record on his way to 276 collegiate wins.
