SAINT LEO, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team cruised past Saint Leo with an 80-66 win at the Marion Bowman Center, fueled by a strong 23-point performance in fast-break situations.
Breeje Schuler was the standout, leading the charge with 23 points, hitting 9 of 16 from the field, and dishing out four assists.
Blanche Toualeu chipped in 12 points, going 6 of 7 from the line, while also grabbing eight rebounds.
Anaya Smith added 12 points with a pair of crucial three-pointers and a block.
KB Hadley was everywhere, managing five assists and snagging four steals.
The Sailfish came out hot in the first quarter, setting the pace early by capitalizing on turnovers and putting up six fast-break points. Hadley and Schuler led the effort with a few layups, sparking an early lead.
Anabel Ellison nailed a three-pointer at 7:18 to knot the score at 7, kicking off a 13-3 run by the 'Fish, with
Maddie Wallhoff's layup at 4:20 as the exclamation point. The quarter ended with the 'Fish leading 24-14, taking full advantage of turnovers and dominating the paint.
The second quarter was a battle. Saint Leo's Olivia Agunzo hit a quick 3-pointer to start, but despite some early turnovers, the Sailfish showed resilience. Hadley and
Darria Whitley kept the scoreboard ticking. Wallhoff's 3-pointer at 1:25 nudged the 'Fish ahead, and Whitley's fast-break layup with 36 seconds on the clock extended the lead. The half closed with the 'Fish on top 41–38, though Saint Leo outscored them 24–17 in the quarter.
PBA came out strong in the third, using free throws from Smith to edge ahead 43-40. Hadley and Schuler, with solid defensive effort, snagged steals that led to points. Saint Leo tried to rally with another Agunzo 3-pointer, but the 'Fish countered with a three from Smith, courtesy of a Hadley assist.
Maren McCallister's three-point play at 3:56 pushed the lead to 57-51. The 'Fish closed the quarter in control, 63-57, thanks to free throws by Toualeu.
The Sailfish put the game away in the fourth, starting with a decisive 12-point run. Toualeu and Schuler were clutch from the line, and Schuler's 3-pointer at 8:12 off a Hadley assist put the 'Fish up by 12. Ellison's defensive tenacity, highlighted by multiple steals and a late block, sealed the deal. The 'Fish wrapped up a commanding 80-66 victory over Saint Leo.
The Sailfish return to the floor on Wednesday night when they head to Melbourne to take on Florida Tech.
