TAMPA, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team faced a tough matchup against the University of Tampa, falling 75-42 at the Bob Martinez Athletics Center.
Leading the charge for the 'Fish was
Anabel Ellison, who tallied 18 points, sinking six shots and three from beyond the arc, while also grabbing nine rebounds and three steals.
Darria Whitley chipped in with six points and six rebounds, and
Anaya Smith added nine points on four field goals.
Blanche Toualeu wrapped up with five points and five rebounds.
The Sailfish hit the ground running, with Ellison nailing a 3-pointer just 46 seconds in to give PBA an early advantage. Ellison was on fire in the first quarter, scoring eight points, including two free throws and another 3-pointer at 5:59. It was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams exchanging leads and PBA achieving four ties and one lead change. The quarter ended with the Sailfish trailing 17–14.
The second quarter saw Palm Beach Atlantic face some hurdles, but Ellison's 3-pointer at 8:12 kept them close, just a point behind Tampa. However, the 'Fish struggled with their shooting, making only one out of 15 attempts. Tampa took advantage, outscoring PBA 18-5 in the quarter, and at halftime, the Sailfish were down 35-19.
In the third quarter, Tampa pushed their lead further, starting with an early 3-pointer by Amy Thompson at 9:39. Despite efforts from Toualeu and Smith, who both added baskets, the 'Fish couldn't keep up with Tampa's control in the paint. Ellison made her presence felt defensively with a steal and a block, but Tampa's scoring, including a tip-in by Ryan Franklin at 3:11, widened the gap. The quarter wrapped up with PBA trailing 57–29.
During the final quarter, the Sailfish made a determined effort to cut Tampa's lead, scoring consistently in the paint. Khalia Whoodley and
Maddie Wallhoff each contributed with layups, while Ellison added points, including a jumper at 6:55. Despite these efforts, the 'Fish found it tough to contain Tampa's offense, which took advantage of points from Faith Pickens and Brooklynn Butler. A late steal by Ellison led to a layup at 2:46, but it wasn't enough to turn the tide. The game closed with Tampa winning the quarter by 18 points, ending with a final score of 75-42.
The Sailfish return to the floor on Tuesday when they head on the road for the first round of the SSC tournament.
