Palm Beach Atlantic battles shifting breeze and challenging tidal current at Embry-Riddle-hosted regatta

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic University Sailing returned to the water Saturday at the Greg Popp Trophy, hosted by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at the Halifax Sailing Association. Competing in a competitive two-division FJ fleet, the Sailfish faced a demanding day of light, shifty winds and ever-changing tidal currents that tested sailors from the opening start to the final race.

Following an onshore postponement while waiting for breeze to develop, racing began in just 2-3 knots of wind before a gradual sea breeze built throughout the afternoon. Combined with a reversing tide that shifted from ebb to flood, every race required constant adjustments and precise boat handling.

Palm Beach Atlantic finished 12th overall with 131 points. In A Division, junior Kaylee King teamed with senior Jo Munoz to post consistent finishes throughout the day, while B Division featured a rotation of sophomore Felicity Jones sailing with freshman Jordon Hetchler in the opening races before freshman Gabriela Picard took over for the remainder of the regatta.

Despite the challenging conditions, the event provided valuable racing experience against a strong regional field. With starting lines heavily influenced by current and frequent course adjustments as the wind shifted, sailors were challenged to adapt throughout the day while continuing to build confidence and consistency.

The Greg Popp Trophy marked the second regatta of a busy weekend for the Sailfish, who continue to gain experience against quality competition as they progress through the fall season.
