CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Palm Beach Atlantic sailing team tested itself against a talented cross-regional field this weekend, finishing 13th at the Charleston Fall Interconference hosted by the College of Charleston.
The regatta featured challenging and ever-changing conditions across two days of racing. Light winds delayed the start of competition on Saturday before the race committee was able to complete four races ahead of a steady evening rain. Sunday's forecast called for even lighter breeze, but conditions remained just above the four-knot minimum, allowing racing to begin on schedule. Four additional races were completed before passing showers caused the wind to fade during the ninth race of the regatta. After an extended postponement, racing was ultimately called for the day.
Palm Beach Atlantic showed flashes of strong performance throughout the weekend, highlighted by A Division skipper Dawson Kohl and crew Priscilla Foster, who posted a pair of fourth-place finishes and closed the regatta with a fifth-place finish. Nathan Hjort and Grace VanGessel represented the Sailfish in B Division, gaining valuable experience against one of the deepest fields the team has faced this season.
While the Sailfish experienced moments of success, the weekend also revealed areas for continued growth as the team competed against new opponents from across the country in a highly competitive fleet. The experience provided an important benchmark as Palm Beach Atlantic continues to develop throughout the fall season.
The Sailfish will return to Charleston later this month to compete in the SAISA Fall Fleet Race Championships, scheduled for Oct. 30-Nov. 1, where they will look to build on the lessons learned from this weekend's competition.
