ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball finished its series against Eckerd with a Saturday doubleheader.
The Sailfish tried to bounce back after dropping Friday's series opener. PBA failed to keep the Eckerd bats under wraps, surrendering nine runs in both games. The Tritons took game one, 9-3, followed by a 9-4 win in game two.
Softball returns home on Friday, beginning a series against Lynn. The first pitch at Simpson Field is set for noon.
Game One – EC: 9, PBA: 3
The Sailfish started game one with a pair of base hits in the first inning.
Chloe Nepveux and
Evoni Rodriguez delivered back-to-back singles with one out but were left stranded. PBA had two more runners in the second but came up empty again. The Tritons manufactured a run in the second. A leadoff single, a sac bunt, a wild pitch, and a groundout gave EC a 1-0 lead.
The Tritons added two more runs after a two-run home run in the third inning to make it 3-0. PBA answered in the fourth with an RBI single to right field by
Lauren O'Brien to drive in
Anna Wetzsteon. Eckerd struck back with two runs on two hits, two walks, and a wild pitch to make it 5-1. The 'Fish tried to mount a comeback, scoring two runs in the sixth, courtesy of a two-run single from Nepveux to drive in
Daylin Hejtmanek and O'Brien, making it a 5-3 game.
Eckerd tallied four runs in the bottom half of the sixth. A three-run home run and a solo home run broke the game open 9-3. PBA went down quietly in the seventh to end the game.
O'Brien and Nepvuex accounted for four of PBA's eight hits.
Lacy Marty started in the circle. She gave up five earned runs in 3.1 innings on six hits and one walk with two strikeouts.
Ashlyn Storms pitched 2.2 innings of relief. She gave up four runs on six hits with one walk.
Game Two – EC: 9, PBA: 4
PBA started the scoring in game two. With two outs, a walk, and a stolen base from Rodriguez started the rally.
Larken Maseda also reached on a walk before the pair scored on a fielding error by the Tritons to give the 'Fish a 2-0 lead in the first. Eckerd got one back after back-to-back hits in the bottom of the first to make it 2-1.
The Tritons struck for five more in the bottom of the second. A single, an error, and three consecutive doubles gave Eckerd a 6-2 advantage. EC scored again in the fourth after a leadoff double and another PBA error to make it 7-2. Maseda came through for the Sailfish in the fifth inning. With two outs, she singled down the left-field line to score Hejtmanek and O'Brien to make it 7-4.
The Tritons scored two more runs on four hits to extend their lead to 9-4 in the sixth. Rodriguez led off the seventh with a single, but PBA failed to string hits together. Eckerd held completed the series with a 9-4 win.
Rylee Little and Hejtmanek led PBA with two hits each.
Olivia Zimmerman was the starting pitcher for PBA. She gave up six runs on seven hits and one walk.
Lauren Allen gave up three runs in relief. She surrendered five hits on one walk and one strikeout.
