Softball Comes Up Short Against No. 19 NSU

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team finished its series against Nova Southeastern with a Saturday doubleheader.

The Sailfish looked to bounce back from Friday's loss against the No. 19-ranked Sharks. The 'Fish held leads in both games but could not hold on. The Sharks took the first game 6-4 after scoring two runs in the fourth and seventh innings. NSU won the second game 5-2 thanks to a four-run third inning to complete the sweep.

The 'Fish travel next weekend for an SSC series at Eckerd. The first game in St. Petersburg takes place Friday at 6 p.m.

Game One – NSU: 6, PBA: 4

NSU singled and stole second to start the game. The runner moved to third after a groundout. The next batter grounded it to Evoni Rodriguez at shortstop. Rodriguez made a strong throw home beating the runner and creating a rundown. Unfortunately for the Sailfish, an errant throw in the rundown allowed a run to score. Lacy Marty limited the damage to one run in the inning.

The Sailfish got one run back in the bottom of the first. A hit batter and an error put a pair of runners on for PBA. A fielder's choice at second back was the first out of the inning, but Rodriguez's head-up baserunning allowed her to advance to second after the play. A groundout to first gave PBA its second out, but Marli Szierer came through with a two-out single to centerfield to drive in Lauren O'Brien and Rodriguez giving PBA a 2-1 lead.

The Sharks started the third with a leadoff triple to right-centerfield. A sacrifice fly was deep enough to allow the runner to tag up and score to tie the game at two. PBA got one back after some control issues for the Sharks. Singles from Chloe Nepveux and Larken Maseda and hit batter loaded the bases with one out. Szierer drew a walk to put PBA back in front, 3-2.

The Sharks regained the lead in the fourth with two runs on three hits, including a two-out single down the left-field line to score a pair of runs. PBA tried to answer after a pair of runners reached base in the sixth, but it failed to drive them in. The visitors added some insurance runs in the seventh, scoring a pair of runs on two hits and one walk to make it a 6-3 game.

PBA did not go away quietly. Nepveux led off with a single before an error and a wild pitch put runners on second and third with no outs. Nepveux scored on a fielder's choice, but NSU forced a double play the next at-bat to end the game with a 6-4 win.

Nepveux finished with two hits while Szierer led the 'Fish with three RBIs. Lacy Marty pitched a complete game in the circle. She gave up five earned runs on 13 hits and one walk with two strikeouts.

Game One – NSU: 5, PBA: 2

NSU scored in the first again in game two. A leadoff single and stolen base set up a base hit and a wild pitch to make it 1-0. PBA answered in the bottom of the inning. O'Brien and Nepveux started the frame with walks before a flyout and a Maseda single to the left side. Olivia Zimmerman singled to left field to drive in O'Brien and Szierer drew a walk to make it 2-1, forcing an NSU pitching change. The change paid off with a pair of strikeouts ending the inning.

The Sharks tallied four runs in the third inning. A leadoff single and stolen base put a runner in scoring position with no outs. The NSU runner tried to score on a single to center field, but Daylin Hejtmanek's throw was in time to preserve PBA's lead. Another base hit and a stolen base put runners on second and third with one out. A flyball was sent to centerfield and Hejtmanek nearly threw out another runner. The throw was on time, but the catcher couldn't corral it, allowing NSU to tie the game. An infield single scored another run to make it 3-2 NSU. The Sharks added two more runs after three walks and a single to make it a 5-2 game.

That was plenty of run support for NSU's pitcher. Rodriguez tallied a pair of hits, but the Sailfish failed to put a rally together, falling to the Sharks, 5-2. Zimmerman started for the 'Fish in the circle. She pitched 2.2 innings, giving up five earned runs on six hits with four walks and one strikeout. Karen Vasquez pitched 4.1 scoreless innings of relief, giving up three hits.
