Softball Drops Doubleheader to Saint Leo

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team concluded its series against Saint Leo on Saturday.

The Sailfish looked to bounce back after dropping last night's game down the stretch. SLU carried its momentum over into Saturday, winning both in a commanding fashion. The Lions took game one, 8-2, followed by a 7-1 win in game two to complete the series sweep.

PBA is back in action on Friday with a non-conference doubleheader against Kutztown. Game one at Simpson Field is set for 5 p.m.

Game One – Saint Leo: 8, PBA: 2

The Lions wasted no time taking a large lead in game one. The visitors struck for eight runs in the first four innings. SLU scored its first run on a leadoff triple, followed by an RBI single. SLU tacked on three in the second inning off two hits, a hit batter, and an error to take a 4-0 lead. SLU added three more in the third off three hits and an error to make it 7-0.

PBA got on the board in the bottom of the third. Kaitlyn Campbell led off with a double down the right-field line. Daylin Hejtmanek singled to center to put runners on second and third with no outs. Campbell scored on a wild pitch to make it a 7-1 game. Hejtmanek moved to third on a passed ball before scoring on a sac bunt by Evoni Rodriguez to make it 7-2.

SLU got one run back on two hits and an RBI groundout to increase its lead to 8-2. The 'Fish finished the game with two hits as the Lions clinched the series with the 8-2 win. Lauren Allen started in the circle. She was charged with four earned runs on seven hits with one strikeout. Ashlyn Storms tossed 4.2 innings in relief. She gave up one earned run on four hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Game Two – Saint Leo: 7, PBA: 1

The onslaught continued in game two. The Lions scored five runs on five hits and a walk to take a quick 5-0 lead. Rodriguez and Larken Maseda tried to get the offense going with a pair of hits in the fourth, but they were left stranded.

The Sailfish got on the board in the sixth inning. Campbell singled and stole second to start the frame. Hejtmanek singled to left center to put runners at the corners. A sac fly from Rodriguez was deep enough to score Campbell to make it 5-1.

A two-run homer put the exclamation mark on the series for Saint Leo. The blast to rightfield made it 7-1. Rylee Little pitched all seven innings. She gave up seven runs on 10 hits with one walk and a strikeout.
