WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish, shorthanded because of injury, fell to the #6 Embry-Riddle Eagles by a score of 68-54.
The Sailfish stayed with the Eagles in the first quarter thanks to 9 points from Karyzma Pierre. After the first frame, the Sailfish were tied with the Eagles at 11. Moving onto the second quarter, the Eagles stretched out a big lead. Embry-Riddle scored 21 unanswered points and forced two different PBA timeouts before Zoe Wortinger stopped the bleeding with a turnaround midrange jumper. The Sailfish battled back a little bit and found themselves down 35-20 at the halftime break.
After the halftime break, the Sailfish weren't able to cut into the Eagle lead. For every basket made by PBA, Embry-Riddle had an answer. The Sailfish cut it to an 11-point deficit on a three-point basket by Daria Whitley but the Eagles drew the lead back out to 16 shortly after. The Sailfish found themselves down 52-37 heading into the final frame.
Early in the 4th, the Sailfish went on a bit of a run and closed in on the Eagles. Thanks to a three-point play from Katelynn Hagy and a layup from Kash Ayuso, the Sailfish were back within 10. The Sailfish were able to cut it down to eight on multiple occasions but that would be the closest the Sailfish would get. The Eagles had an answer for every basket that the Sailfish made to get within eight.
Karyzma Pierre led the way for the 'Fish with 18 points. Carleigh Andrews followed behind her with 12 points. Kash Ayuso also broke double digits with 10 points of her own. Anabel Ellison, the usual starting point guard, did not play due to injury.
The 'Fish return to the floor on Saturday when they host Tampa inside the Rubin Arena at 2:00 p.m. In the previous matchup between the two teams saw the Spartans take a 76-51 win in Tampa.
