VALDOSTA, Ga.- The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team dropped their opening day game to the West Florida Argonauts on Friday afternoon. Anabel Ellison led the way for the Fish with 13 points.
West Florida started off hot to open the game, getting out to an 11-0 lead before Darria Whitley knocked down a three-pointer to get the Sailfish on the board. A couple of free throws from Ellison and buckets from KB Hadley and Khalia Woodley, the Sailfish cut the deficit to eight points at the end of the first frame.
The Sailfish continued to fight back in the second quarter. A couple buckets from Breeje Schuler and Hadley combined with a couple trips to the line for the 'Fish brought PBA back within six heading into the halftime break.
Coming out of halftime, both teams played strong defensively and didn't score much. Later in the quarter, West Florida extended their lead as the Sailfish only scored four points in the frame on buckets from Schuler and Whitley. The Sailfish trailed by 12 heading into the final period.
The Sailfish fought back and did not give up. The Sailfish went on a 12-0 run, including five points from Ellison to get back in the game and back within 3 points. However, the Argonauts, a good team coming off a 20-win season, handled the pressure well and went on a 7-0 run of their own to finish off the game.
The Sailfish return to the floor tomorrow when they take on the crossover hosts, Valdosta State, at 2:30 p.m.
