Popp Scores a Pair of Goals in Win over Lynn

BOCA RATON, Fla. — The Palm Beach Atlantic women's soccer team defeated Lynn 2-1 on Wednesday at Bobby Campbell Stadium.

The 'Fish took an early lead with two first-half goals, both coming from Kendall Popp. Despite a strong second-half effort, the Knights managed only one goal. The Sailfish's defense held firm, with their goalkeeper making three crucial saves. Popp's goals were the first two of her collegiate career.

The first half began with PBA demonstrating offensive pressure early on. Ariana Jones initiated the attack with a shot saved by LU's goalkeeper, Emma Brunelli, at 7:36. Keira Dawley made a crucial save against Brisa Sastre's attempt in the third minute, maintaining a defensive stand for the 'Fish.

Momentum shifted decisively in the 31st minute when Popp scored, breaking the deadlock after the ball deflected off a Lynn defender and went right to her, setting her up to find the bottom right corner of the net. Popp struck again just three minutes later, with an assist from Natalia Ragonese, extending the lead to 2-0. The half closed with the Sailfish holding onto a two-goal advantage.

The second half began with the 'Fish maintaining their 2-0 lead. Madeleine Hulme and Faith Hardy both registered shots early in the half, though neither found the target. Dawley made a crucial save in the 63rd minute, preventing the Knights from closing the gap.

LU managed to break through in the 73rd minute with a goal by Kayleigh Merchant, assisted by Arianna Kinsley, reducing the deficit to one. Despite LU's increased pressure, the 'Fish held firm, with Jordan Lavery taking a late shot that went wide. The half concluded with the Sailfish securing a 2-1 victory.

Popp scored two goals, including the game-winner, to lead the 'Fish. Ragonese contributed an assist, adding to the team's offensive efforts. Abigail Longstaff led the team in shots, recording four attempts. Dawley made three saves in goal, securing the victory.

The win gives the 'Fish better position as they look to make the conference tournament. PBA sits in seventh place with nine points. The Sailfish need to finish in the top eight to make the SSC tournament.

PBA has two games left with the next match coming against Nova Southeastern next Wednesday. The match at the Rinker Athletic Campus is set for 6 p.m.
