LAKELAND, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team concluded its series against Florida Southern on Saturday.
The day started with a pitchers' duel. It took 11 innings for a team to push across a run.
Cambria Arturo tossed all 11 innings, shutting down the Mocs long enough for the Sailfish to win the game 1-0 to clinch the series. After being shut out for 18 total innings to start the series, the Mocs finally broke through in game three. FSC scored four runs in the first inning of game three, enough to win 4-0 to avoid the sweep.
PBA returns to Simpson Field to host Barry next weekend. The first game on Friday is set for 6 p.m.
Game One – PBA: 1, FSC: 0
Arturo turned in one of the best performances of her Sailfish career on Saturday. In 11 innings of work, she held the Mocs to two hits and three walks with four strikeouts.
The Sailfish totaled six hits as a team in game one, but it took until the 11th inning for them to tally their first run of the day.
Elisa Grande singled with one out. An error by the Mocs put runners on second and third. That set up an RBI double from
Larken Maseda to give the Sailfish a 1-0 lead.
That was all the run support Arturo needed. She set down the Mocs in order in the bottom of the 11th to earn the win.
Game Two – FSC: 4, PBA: 0
After holding the Mocs scoreless for the first 18 innings of the series, FSC opened the second game of the day with four runs on four hits, including three doubles and a hit batter. That put the Sailfish in an early 4-0 lead.
The Sailfish had a chance to answer in the fifth inning after a pair of base hits put runners at first and third, but PBA came up empty. That was the best scoring opportunity the 'Fish had in the game.
Lacy Marty started the game in the circle. After a tough first inning, she settled in, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings. She ended with four earned runs on eight hits and no walks with a strikeout in 4.1 innings pitched.
