'Fish Fall to Lions on Senior Day

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic women's lacrosse team hit the field for the second time this week. Coming off a blowout win over North Greenville, the Sailfish wrapped up non-conference play by hosting Molloy today. The 'Fish played even with the Lions for a quarter before the road team went on a scoring run that would lead to their 13-9 victory. PBA's record falls to 3-5 after the defeat.

The Sailfish honored ten seniors today prior to the beginning of the contest and started many of the same group against the Lions. Molloy jumped out to a 2-0 lead early before PBA scored two goals within a minute as Addyson Johnson and Rachel Delate each found the back of the net to even the score. The two sides traded goals and finished with Molloy up 5-4 after the opening 15 minutes of play as Delate and Ella Howlin scored the goals for the Sailfish.

PBA was outshot in the first half but Courtney Rausch was solid early, making three in the first quarter and two more early in the second. However, a 4-0 Molloy scoring run in the middle part of the second quarter would be the end of the day for Rausch as the 'Fish made a change in the cage, bringing in Georgia Karns. After winning draw controls early, the visitors had the better of it in the second quarter and it felt like they had a vast majority of the possession as they blanked the Sailfish offense in the second quarter. PBA got just four shots as the two sides went into the half with the 'Fish trailing 9-4.

The Sailfish continued to battle and did well to get back into the game in the third quarter. They outscored Molloy 4-1 in the third quarter, led by three Delate goals and one Bella Marchiano goal. PBA outshot the Lions 9-6 in the quarter as they cut their deficit to two, trailing 10-8 heading to the final quarter.

After making the comeback, the Sailfish might have run out of gas late as the Lions responded with a 3-0 scoring run to open the fourth. Annika Limpert would add one late for PBA but they would run out of time, falling 13-9. Karns was solid in net after she entered, allowing five goals and making five saves.

Six different Sailfish scored on the day, as they continue to be led by Delate who found the back of the net four times. She takes her team-high scoring tally to 33 and also leads the team with 13 assists. Defensively, senior Sara Metheny seemed to be all over the field as the midfielder made plays in all three zones of the field. She finished with a team-high four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

PBA now moves into the heart of conference play in the Sunshine State Conference. They fell to a strong Rollins team by four in their league opener but return to action at Tampa on March 23. The Spartans are 6-2 on the season and ranked fifth in the country.
