WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team faced off in a doubleheader against Colorado School of Mines on Friday.
The Sailfish (2-2) held a lead for nearly every inning of the first game. PBA entered the top of the seventh with a 3-1 lead, but the Orediggers (2-0) pushed across five runs in their last at-bat to steal the first game, 6-3. The second game was a pitchers duel that went scoreless until the seventh inning.
Lacy Marty shined in her second start of the season, but Mines finally pushed through in the top of the seventh. PBA got the tying run on base but came up short, losing 1-0.
PBA plays another doubleheader on Saturday against East Stroudsburg. The first pitch of game one is set for 10 a.m.
Game One - Colorado School of Mines: 6, PBA: 3
The Sailfish plated the first runs of game one in the bottom of the second inning. Two hit batters and a single by
Gracie Mullett loaded the bases for
Rhiannon Sibbett. The sophomore placed a single right over the shortstop that scored
Alexia Martinez.
Kaitlyn Campbell followed with an RBI single down the leftfield line to make it 2-0. The 'Fish extended their lead to 3-0 in the third.
Larken Maseda doubled to start the inning. She scored on an RBI single to right field by Mullett.
Karen Vasquez started the game in the circle for PBA. She held Mines to one hit until the fifth inning. A leadoff double and a passed ball moved a runner to third, and she kept running home after an errant throw went into the outfield to score Mines' first run of the game.
Vasquez cruised through the game until the seventh inning. Mines adjusted its fourth time through the order, scoring five runs on five hits and one walk to take a 6-3 lead. PBA went down in order in the bottom of the inning.
Mullett led PBA with two hits and an RBI. PBA totaled five hits as a team. Vasquez pitched 6.2 innings, giving up five earned runs on eight hits and a walk with two strikeouts.
Ashlyn Storms finished the game, forcing a lineout to first base to end the top of the seventh.
Game Two - Colorado School of Mines: 1, PBA: 0
The 'Fish were gifted a gem of a start from Marty in game two. The junior pitched six scoreless innings, but she did not receive any run support. PBA's lineup mustered three hits and no walks in the game.
The Orediggers led off the seventh inning with a double. The runner advanced on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice bunt to give the Orediggers a 1-0 lead. Martinez got on base to start the bottom of the seventh.
Isabella Hernandez laid down a bunt to advance the runner to second. Martinez saw a vacant third base and sprinted around second, but she got thrown out in a bang-bang play. That play cleared the bases and a flyout from PBA ended the Sailfish's comeback hopes.
Marty gave up six hits and zero walks in the game with three strikeouts.
