PBA Downs Lynn on the Road For Fourth-Straight Victory

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team hit the road today riding a conference winning streak at Lynn. A defensive game came to life in the fourth quarter as the Sailfish were able to pull away to their fourth-straight win, 59-50. PBA's record improves to 13-9 overall and 7-7 in Sunshine State Conference play.

The 'Fish were shorthanded tonight without the services of reigning defensive player of the week and SSC leading rebounder Mariyah Fletcher, as well as key bench piece Claire Davis. Both sides struggled from the field for the majority of the game tonight as PBA jumped out to a 14-9 lead after the first quarter. Leading scorer Kash Ayuso took just one shot in the quarter as she was held in check early. Karyzma Pierre was aggressive in the quarter as she led the way with four points. PBA was just north of 30 percent shooting, but defensively the Sailfish was able to hold Lynn to 4-of-14 shooting.

After the slow start, the two sides combined for just 19 points in the second quarter. PBA went 3-of-17 from the field and Lynn went 4-of-15 as the defensive effort from both sides was ahead of the offensive execution. The 'Fish held onto a 22-20 lead after 20 minutes of play.

The second half was taken over by PBA's tandem of Jillian Schenk and Ayuso. They combined for 28 of the team's 37 points in the second half as Schenk hit on all three of her shots from deep on the night including big ones late as Lynn tried to make a run. After outscoring Lynn 12-10 in the third quarter, both sides got hot from the floor late. The home side hit on seven of their last eight field goals but PBA was able to answer by hitting six of their last seven shots and Ayuso was able to ice the game from the free throw line. Lynn was never to get the PBA below four points as Ashleigh Boulin hit an important jumper followed by a Schenk three to regrow the lead.

Both sides finished shooting 34 percent from the floor overall but PBA was able to hit on 7-of-17 shots from three. Despite leaving 12 points at the line, the Sailfish were able to force 19 Lynn turnovers on their way to a nine-point win. PBA is now just a half-game out of fourth place in the SSC standings.

PBA has a chance to make a statement in their next contest when they host Tampa this weekend. The Spartans narrowly escaped PBA when the two sides met earlier this year, as Tampa is No. 13 in the country and carries a 20-4 record.
