WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team hosted Keiser University Friday night in the Battle of West Palm Beach.
The Sailfish were treated to a strong performance from
Karen Vasquez in the circle. She held the Seahawks to one run in six innings pitched. The Sailfish battled back from a one-run deficit to take a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning. Keiser got the tying run to second base in the seventh, but
Cambria Arturo came in and slammed the door for the save with a game-ending strikeout.
PBA totaled six hits as a team, highlighted by an RBI single from
Toree Hoobler. Vasquez was charged with one earned run on six hits with four strikeouts.
The Seahawks struck first in the game thanks to some head-up baserunning. With runners on first and third with two outs, the Keiser baserunner broke from first to draw a throw to second base, allowing the runner at third to score. PBA answered in the bottom of the inning.
Elisa Grande hustled out an infield single and came around to score on Hoobler's blooper down the right-field line.
Both offenses were quiet until the fifth inning.
Evoni Rodriguez walked to start the inning and stole second base. The shortstop muffed the throw on the steal, and the ball got away, allowing Rodriguez to advance to third. She scored on another error by the Seahawks, putting the 'Fish ahead, 2-1.
The Sailfish looked to add some insurance in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs,
Gracie Mullett and
Madison Schlichte singled. Mullett forced a throw home but stopped at third, and Schlichte advanced to second on the throw, putting a pair of runners in scoring position. Unfortunately for the 'Fish, a strikeout stranded the runners.
Keiser led off the seventh with a single, prompting coach
Ty Singleton to bring in Arturo to close the game. After a sacrifice bunt gave PBA its first out of the frame, Arturo shut down the Keiser comeback with a pair of strikeouts to seal a 2-1 win for the 'Fish.
PBA competes again on Saturday with a doubleheader against Ave Maria. The first pitch of game one is set for 12:00 pm.
