Sailfish Men's Soccer Puts Four Past Flagler In Opener

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic men's soccer team began its 2023 campaign tonight on the road at Flagler. The Sailfish controlled the game from the jump in rout to a 4-1 victory to take their record to 1-0 on the early season.

The Sailfish didn't have to wait long to find the back of the net as leading returner Harry Gardner opened his goal-scoring account for the season inside of two minutes. The ball fell to Gardner just outside the Saints box and the Sailfish midfielder didn't need much room as he shifted the ball onto his strong right foot and laced a shot into the top left corner.

The 'Fish outshot the Saints 7-5 in the opening half as they kept the pressure on after the early goal. PBA was threatening as the Saints keeper was forced off his line for a clearance and the ball found PBA defender Orion McHugh in an advanced position. He was able to sneak his shot past the out-of-position keeper and a few Flagler defenders as the Sailfish doubled their lead in the 38th minute as PBA led 2-0 at the half.

Two Sailfish returners found goals in the first half, but it was newcomer Narcis Bou Dalmau who scored the third goal for the 'Fish. He charged onto a loose ball in the box from his midfield position and was able to curl a left-footed shot into the far corner. Already fully in control of the game, the Sailfish added one more goal as the two PBA forwards linked up in the 75th minute. Nicklas Clausen got behind the defense on the wing and played a ball across to Kevonte Willoughby Williams who was able to tap in home.

With just over two minutes to play, the Saints got one back as a penalty was called off a cross into the Sailfish box. The penalty was converted and the only thing that got past PBA keeper Salvador Plaza Rosso who made five saves in his Sailfish debut.

It was a perfect result for the Sailfish in their opener and they have a fairly quick turnaround for game number two as they will travel to face Florida Memorial on Monday. The Lions are 0-1-1 on the season and the Sailfish are 6-0 all-time against them.
