DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic men's soccer team hit the road tonight for the final time this season as they played Embry-Riddle. The Sailfish needed a win to make the Sunshine State Conference Tournament, but after 85 minutes of strong play, those hopes came to an end as they fell 3-1.
PBA completely controlled play in the opening 45 minutes of play. They outshot the Eagles 9-1 in the first half and their pressure was finally capitalized on when defender
Rufus Roth scored on a set piece in the 36th minute of play. The goal marks the first of the season for the central defender and seemed like it would be enough for the Sailfish on the night as the 'Fish led by one at the half.Â
Early in the second half, the Sailfish went forward looking for the goal that would put the game away but they were never able to take advantage of their chances in the second half. As time winded down, PBA just needed to hold onto the lead which gave the Eagles more of the ball. In the 85th minute, a well-taken free kick was headed home by the home side as ERAU tied the game 1-1. With just five minutes remaining, the Sailfish needed a response to stay alive. As they poured numbers forward looking for the victory they needed to keep their season alive, they were hit on the counterattack twice in the closing seconds as they left no defenders back. PBA outshot the Eagles 12-6 with most of the ERAU chances coming in the closing minutes but nevertheless the 'Fish fell 3-1.
The defeat marks the first time the Sailfish have fallen to Embry-Riddle in men's soccer after winning the previous seven meetings. PBAÂ ends the season with a 6-8-2 record overall and a 3-6-1 conference record.
