Sailfish Shutout Lakers to Move to 4-0

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic men's soccer team returned to action today as they hosted Clayton State University. The No. 13 ranked Sailfish ground out a 1-0 victory to move to 4-0 on the season.

Just two days after a physical win over Lander University, the Sailfish played a scorching mid-day game against the Lakers. The two sides played out an even opening 20 minutes before the Lakers had the best opening chance. Sailfish keeper Guillermo Falo made an acrobatic save and denied a Clayton State shot in the top-right corner. After three shots in the opening 25 minutes for PBA, the 'Fish broke through off a set piece in the 25th minute. Adrian Levy played a corner into the center of the box and it was attacked by defender Orion McHugh who skied above the Lakers defenders and put a header past the keeper. The two sides each had seven shots in the first half as the Sailfish went into the half leading 1-0.

It looked like the Lakers had a breakaway early in the second but defender Niall Owens hustled back and was able to make a sliding challenge to block the scoring opportunity. It was a back-and-forth second half with each side creating chances. PBA's best fell to Harry Gardner who beat the keeper with a shot but hit the left post in the 68th minute.

While Clayton State was able to get the ball in some dangerous areas, they never really seriously threatened the Sailfish goal in the second half. They had 18 shots in the game but the PBA defense was able to block half of those shots from getting to goal. The Sailfish had a chance in the final minute to put the game away with a late rush, but Fred Ferreira was unable to get on the end of a ball across the box and the game ended with PBA winning 1-0.

PBA had 17 shots for the game and seven shots on goal while Falo was called on to make six saves to earn his fourth shutout. After a perfect start in non-conference, the Sailfish tackle Sunshine State Conference play next as they open on Sep. 10 at Saint Leo. The Lions are 4-0 with two ranked victories early in the season.
