Softball Splits Against Barry on Senior Day

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – It was senior day for the Palm Beach Atlantic softball team on Sunday as the team hosted Barry in an SSC doubleheader.

The Sailfish got back on track to start the day. Cambria Arturo pitched a gem of a game. The hurler pitched a complete-game shutout, carrying PBA to a 1-0 win. The Sailfish nearly pulled off a dramatic comeback in game two, battling back from a 4-0 deficit. PBA forced extra innings but fell in eight innings, 5-4.

The Sailfish honored seniors, Katherine Budnovich, Hayley Haas, Meredith Milam, Janie McCloskey, Emma Gipson, and Maura Glatczak before the game. This group of seniors plays their last home game at Simpson Field on Monday.

PBA concludes its series against the Bucs with an evening game on Monday. The first pitch at Simpson Field takes place at 6 p.m.

Game One – PBA: 1, Barry: 0

The Sailfish recorded just three hits in the first game, and they all came in the same inning. Milam mustered PBA's first hit of the game with a leadoff single to right field in the fourth. After two popouts, McCloskey beat out an infield single which advanced Milam to second. Milam scored thanks to an RBI double down the left-field line from Glatczak which gave the 'Fish a 1-0 lead.

Arturo turned in a stellar performance in the circle. She conceded just two hits in seven innings with eight strikeouts and two walks. Today's game was her second shutout of the season. Barry started the seventh inning with a walk, a stolen base, and a bunt to put a runner on third with one out. Arturo got out of the jam when a popup to Dallas Watterson was caught and she threw to Milam covering at third to double up the runner and seal the 1-0 win for PBA.

Game Two – Barry: 5, PBA: 4

Barry got on the board early in game one. The Bucs scored three runs on two hits and one walk in the first inning, manufacturing the third run via a sacrifice fly. PBA tried to answer with a pair of runners in the bottom of the inning, but they were left stranded. The Sailfish had runners on first and second with one out in the third, and even loaded the bases with two outs, but came up empty again.

The Bucs added an insurance run in the sixth with two hits and a PBA error. With two outs, a ball got by the Sailfish third baseman which allowed a run to score. The Sailfish finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth. Gipson got the rally started with a single and later scored on a triple by McCloskey. Glatczak singled to left field to score McCloskey and make it a 4-2 game. Elisa Grande kept it going with a single to the outfield to put runners on first and second. A double steal put runners on second and third, setting up Briana Rodriguez to tie the game with a two-RBI single up the middle to make it 4-4.

Clutch hitting helped the Bucs in the top of the eighth. With a runner on second and two outs, a single to centerfield brought the runner around third and scored safely, just beating Daylin Hejtmanek's throw from the outfield to give Barry a 5-4 lead. PBA did not go down quietly. Glatczak reached on an error to start the inning, followed by another hit by Grande to put runners on first and second. Unfortunately for the 'Fish, the comeback fell short after a strikeout and a pair of flyouts. Barry held on to win, 5-4.

Budnovich and Grande led PBA with two hits each. McCloskey went 1-for-2 with two walks, one RBI, and one run. PBA totaled 10 hits in the game. Lacy Marty got the start in the circle. She pitched 5.2 innings and allowed three earned runs on seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Chloe Nepveux came on in relief, tossing 2.1 innings with one run on two hits and one strikeout.
