WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team began its SSC series against Embry-Riddle on Friday night.
The Sailfish looked to bounce back after dropping a series to Eckerd last weekend. ERAU entered tonight's game having won five of its last six games and receiving votes in the NFCA top-25. PBA's Cambria Arturo shut down the Eagles in the circle. She tossed a two-hit shutout to start PBA off with a 1-0 win in the series.
Arturo did not surrender a walk in the game. She gave up just two hits with five strikeouts in one of the best outings of her Sailfish career. PBA totaled four hits at the plate with one walk and three hit batters. Dallas Watterson drove in PBA's lone run of the game. With two outs in the fourth inning, Watterson singled up the middle to score Maura Glatczak. The run turned out to be plenty of run support for Arturo.
The Sailfish had plenty of opportunities to add to their lead. PBA totaled eight runners left on base. The 'Fish started the game strong as Briana Rodriguez led-off by stretching a single to left-centerfield into a double. She advanced to third on a passed ball with one out, but she was left stranded.
A bunt single and stolen base by Daylin Hejtmanek followed by a walk from Rodriguez and a wild pitch put runners on second and third with one out in the fifth. Unfortunately for the 'Fish, a pair of strikeouts silenced the rally. The 'Fish loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth, but Hejtmanek's line drive up the middle was snagged by the Eagle pitcher.
The Eagles managed to get a base hit with two outs in the seventh, but Arturo slammed the door shut with a strikeout on the outside corner to end the game. Today's performance was her third shutout in her career.
PBA plays two more games against the Eagles on Saturday. The first pitch of game one at Simpson Field takes place at 12 p.m.
