WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team finished its season against No. 9 Tampa with a Saturday doubleheader.
The Sailfish failed to avoid the series sweep on Saturday. PBA (10-16, 9-9 SSC) dropped the first game due in large part to some costly errors. The Sailfish produced some runs late, but not enough to come back as Tampa (23-8, 11-4 SSC) took game one, 6-2. The Sailfish had an opportunity to win the second game but were missing a clutch hit to break through offensively. Tampa completed the sweep with a 2-0 win.
The Sailfish hit the road to play Flager in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday. The first pitch in St. Augustine, Fla. takes place at 1 p.m.
Game One - Tampa: 6, PBA: 2
The Spartans took the lead in the second inning thanks to some small ball. A walk and a pair of bunt singles loaded the bases with no outs. A single down the right-field line scored one run, and nearly scored another, but the relay throw from
Hayley Haas got the out at the plate. An infield single scored a second run, but the damage was held to two. With two outs in the third inning, a walk followed by a single to centerfield that got by the PBA centerfielder allowed another run to score and make it 3-0.
Tampa scored three more runs in the fourth inning on three hits and two errors to make it 6-0. PBA tried to start a rally in the fifth, starting with a leadoff walk by
Daylin Hejtmanek, but a double play killed the momentum for PBA. The 'Fish got on the board in the sixth.
Katherine Budnovich doubled to left-center with one out. She traded places with
Emma Gipson who followed with a double of her own to make it 6-1.
Janie McCloskey kept it going with a base hit to left field, but Gipson was thrown out going home to end the inning. PBA plated another run in the seventh with an RBI single by
Evoni Rodriguez, but it was too little, too late for the Sailfish as Tampa won, 6-2.
Lacy Marty pitched a complete game in the circle. In seven innings, she surrendered three earned runs on nine hits and two walks with six strikeouts. Budnovich and Gipson led the Sailfish offense with two hits each. PBA totaled seven hits in the game.
Game Two - Tampa: 2, PBA: 0
Karen Vasquez had the best performance of her young career so far in the circle in game two. She surrendered one earned run in seven innings, giving up five hits and one walk with three strikeouts. An error in the third inning started the Tampa rally in the third inning. A pair of two-out hits allowed the visitors to take a 2-0 lead.
Briana Rodriguez started the bottom of the third win a single to centerfield. After a fielder's choice,
Meredith Milam singled through the left side to put runners on first and second with one out. Unfortunately for the 'Fish, both runners were left stranded. McCloskey and
Maura Glatczak started the fourth with a pair of singles to put runners on first and third with no outs, but a pair of strikeouts and a pop-out allowed the Spartans to escape. The Sailfish mustered a base runner in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, but failed to come through in the clutch. Tampa earned the sweep by winning game three, 2-0.
PBA outhit the Spartans, totaling seven hits compared to five from Tampa. McCloskey recorded two hits for the Sailfish.
