Sailfish Down Panthers To Earn Season Sweep

MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team traveled to face the Florida Tech Panthers tonight. After defeating the Panthers 53-48 earlier this season, the Sailfish used a second-half run tonight to pull away and secure the 71-59 victory and the season sweep.

The two sides were even in the first quarter and throughout the first half as the two sides were tied 14-14 after the opening ten minutes of play. PBA shot 6-of-15 from the floor while Shekinah Guthrie got off to a quick start as she scored eight points in the first quarter. Getting the start inside, Mariyah Fletcher went 2-for-2 from the field, adding four points.

The Sailfish were 7-of-17 from the floor in the second quarter as they scored 16 points. They had a balanced attack as six different Sailfish scored a basket, but PBA committed eight turnovers that the Panthers capitalized on while outscoring PBA 17-16 and leading by one at the half.

The story of the game was that the Sailfish were able to dominate the Panthers in the paint and on the offensive glass. PBA outscored Florida Tech 38-18 in the paint and 26-9 in second-chance points on 21 offensive rebounds. The 'Fish shot the ball well inside and out in the third quarter as they were 8-of-13 overall and 3-for-5 from three. Alisa Marlow connected on two and Kash Ayuso hit the third from deep as PBA went on an 8-0 run to take the lead. Defensively, the Sailfish held the Panthers to 5-of-14 shooting and 16 points as they captured a four-point lead at the end of the third, 51-47.

Ayuso added two more big three-pointers in the fourth quarter as PBA began to pull away. She scored 11 of her 13 in the second half while Guthrie continued to be a force throughout, finishing with a game-high 20 points and 11 rebounds. Fletcher was just a rebound shy of a double-double of her own as she was 5-of-8 from the floor, finishing with 11 points and 9 boards. Marlow was the fourth Sailfish player to crack double figures as she finished with ten points while Jahnae Midget scored eight off the bench.

PBA outscored the Panthers 20-12 in the fourth quarter, forcing Florida Tech to shoot just 19 percent in the final quarter and 30 percent overall in the game. PBA finished shooting 44 percent and were 7-of-20 from three. PBA led for over 28 minutes of the action tonight as they finished off the 71-59 victory.

The Sailfish have one more game before their season comes to an end as they host Tampa on Saturday. The Spartans are the top team in the SSC at 25-5 overall and 16-3 in SSC play.
