Sailfish Drop SSC Opener In Lakeland

LAKELAND, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team hit the road for the first time this season to take on Sunshine State Conference opponent Florida Southern. The Sailfish got behind the eight ball with a slow start and never could recover falling 78-53 and taking their record to 1-1 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.

Just like in their opener, the Sailfish struggled from the floor in the opening ten minutes of play. They managed to go just 2-of-15 from the floor as they were outscored 26-10 in the first quarter. PBA committed six turnovers that turned into 16 Moccasin points off turnovers. Jahnae Midget and Claire Davis each scored three points to lead the 'Fish in the first quarter.

After falling behind early, the Sailfish geared up their defense in the second quarter and held the Mocs to just 14 points and 27 percent shooting in the second quarter. The Sailfish countered by shooting 3-of-15 from the field, led by seven from Darria Whitley. PBA was 2-of-12 from deep in the opening half but was able to take advantage of their trips to the line going 10-for-12. PBA trailed 40-22 after 20 minutes of play.

The Sailfish came out of the halftime break and immediately went on an offensive run. They cut the Mocs lead down to 12, led by Alma Danielsson who had 11 in the quarter going 4-of-5 from the floor and 3-of-4 from three. PBA went on to win the quarter 18-17 but the early offensive spurt was short-lived as the Mocs extended the lead back to 20 and held on throughout.

Danielsson added another seven in the fourth quarter as she finished with a team-high 18 points on the night. Midget was second on the team in scoring with 12 and Whitley finished with ten but was just 3-for-13 from the field. The Mocs finished shooting 43 percent from the field while PBA finished at 27 percent. Each team shot it well from the line but the Mocs outscored the 'Fish by 12 from the charity stripe. Each team had 20 plus turnovers but PBA was outscored 30-20 in points off those giveaways.

The Sailfish return to the court on Monday where they will face off at FAU in a scrimmage before returning to action on Nov. 25 against Purdue Northwest in Fort Lauderdale.
