Sailfish Taken Down By Hot Shooting Mocs

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team played host to the Florida Southern Moccasins this afternoon at Rubin Arena. The Sailfish were unable to get revenge on the Mocs from their defeat earlier this season as they fell today 80-63.

Both sides came out of the gates shooting hot from the field in the opening quarter. The Sailfish had one of their best offensive quarters of the season, as they scored 26 points and were 8-of-13 from the field and 4-of-5 from three. Good ball movement and energy offensively led to open shots that they were able to knock down as Kash Ayuso scored six points and Sia Williams came off the bench and scored a quick eight. The Mocs shot it well, 8-of-12 from the field, as they scored 22 points of their own in the quarter but PBA led 26-22.

The offensive rough patch came to begin the second quarter for the Sailfish as they went the opening six minutes without a point. In that time, FSC went on a 6-0 run to take the lead that they wouldn't relinquish for the remainder of the game. The 'Fish were able to hit just 3-of-9 from the field and they committed six turnovers as they struggled against a Moccasins trap defense. PBA was outscored 17-6 in the quarter and trailed 39-32 at the half.

The Sailfish tried to make runs at the Mocs in the second half, cutting the lead down to five on multiple occasions but FSC hit some timely threes throughout the game to stop any Sailfish runs. Shekinah Guthrie scored five in the quarter and Courtni Demorest hit two threes to lead PBA to 18 points in the third but the Mocs built on their lead scoring 22 points of their own.

Guthrie was the bright spot for the Sailfish in the fourth quarter as she scored eight of her team-high 19 points as she finished with a double-double pulling down ten rebounds as well. Williams was the lone other Sailfish to reach double-figures with her 10 points while Ayuso finished with eight and Alisa Marlow and Jahnae Midget each scored seven points. The Sailfish finished 22-of-51 on the day and were a solid 7-of-15 from three, but the separating factor was the Mocs knocking down 15-of-27 threes as they shot 45 percent from the field overall. FSC guard Mackenzie Steele finished with a game-high 25 points and was 7-of-9 from three to lead the Mocs.

The Sailfish will be back in action at Rubin Arena next week as they host Saint Leo on Feb. 2. The Lions defeated PBA 79-71 in their previous meeting this year and carry a 13-7 record into the game.
