WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team traveled to play the Rollins College Tars this afternoon. After defeating Rollins 65-55 earlier in the year at home, the Sailfish fell 58-53 as their fourth-quarter rally came up just short.
The two sides opened today's game with a defensive first quarter as they each scored 12 points in the opening ten minutes of play. The Sailfish started 4-of-13 from the field but received balanced scoring as five different players scored in the first quarter.
Sia Williams,
Courtni Demorest, and
Jahnae Midget all provided a spark off the bench for PBA as they closed the quarter on a 6-0 run to tie the game.
The Tars took control of the game in the second quarter, as they outscored the 'Fish 22-10. Rollins was 6-of-12 from three to help build a double-digit lead while
Kash Ayuso and
Maria Benitez-Zayas were the lone scorers for the Sailfish in the quarter as they each had five points. The Sailfish trailed 34-22 at the half.
Shekinah Guthrie was strong for the Sailfish in the third quarter, scoring six of her team-high 14 points. She was an efficient 6-of-11 from the field on the day and added eight rebounds to lead the Sailfish. Despite her strong performance in the quarter, the Tars outscored PBA 16-15 in the quarter, connecting on three more makes from deep.
PBA trailed by 13 heading to the fourth quarter but as they have done all year, they continued to battle back and turned the game into a one-possession game late. Guthrie continued her strong second half as she scored eight points in the quarter and Williams added six as PBA outscored Rollins 16-8. The Sailfish forced eight Rollins turnovers in the quarter with their pressure defense to gain extra possessions and took advantage going 7-of-14 from the floor.
An 11-1 run by PBA cut the Rollins lead to 3 after
Sia Williams capped the run with a three-pointer with 1:28 remaining. On the next two Rollins possessions, the Sailfish forced a turnover but a missed Guthrie fade away and a turnover of their own in their final possession sent the Tars to the line with seven seconds left. Two makes from Rollins put the game away as the Sailfish fell by five.
The Sailfish return home and will host Nova Southeastern on Jan. 26 in their next contest. The Sailfish fell at the Sharks 77-68 earlier in the year as NSU is 11-7 on the season.
