PBA's Fourth Quarter Rally Runs Out of Time at Lynn

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team took the short trip to Lynn University tonight to battle with the Fighting Knights. The Sailfish were in a close battle throughout the game before making a late run in the fourth quarter that ran out of time as they fell 62-58.

The Sailfish were the better shooting team in the opening quarter as they hit on 40 percent of their shots early on. Five different Sailfish scored in the first quarter, led by Jahnae Midget who hit two three-pointers to lead PBA with six points in the first quarter. Defensively, PBA held Lynn to just 33 percent shooting but the two sides were tied 14-14 after the first ten minutes of play.

The Sailfish opened the second quarter on a quick 7-0 run led by Shekinah Guthrie who scored seven points in the quarter. After the quick start, the Sailfish offense sputtered to the halftime locker room as they hit just two of their next 11 shots. Lynn was able to get to the free-throw line in the first half, outshooting the Sailfish 13-5 in attempts from the line. PBA scored 14 points for the second straight quarter to start the game but trailed 31-28 at the half.

Neither side was able to get much going offensively in the third quarter as both sides shot under 30 percent from the field. Leading scorer Kash Ayuso was saddled with foul trouble throughout the night and was unable to get into her usual rhythm as she scored just five points through three quarters. The Sailfish also missed her running mate at guard Sia Williams and her 9.7 ppg as PBA was held to seven points in the third quarter. Fortunately for the Sailfish, their defense kept them in the game as they held Lynn to just 12 points and were within striking distance trailing by eight heading to the fourth quarter.

The 'Fish had their best offensive quarter of the night when they needed it the most in the fourth, scoring 23 points on 9-of-18 shooting from the field. Ayuso came to life with eight while Midget and Guthrie continued their solid performances adding six and four respectively. Trailing by 10 with just over three minutes remaining, PBA went on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to two with 56 seconds remaining. PBA was able to come up with a big defensive stop but when they got their chance to tie the game they never were able to get a shot up as a loose ball near mid-court went out of bounds and was controversially given to the Fighting Knights. They knocked down two ensuing free throws to put the game away and secure the four-point victory.

Both sides shot nearly 35 percent from the floor and struggled with turnovers throughout the night in an even contest between the teams. The Knights outscoring the Sailfish by seven at the line was the major separator between the two sides statistically. Midget finished the night with a team-high 14 points while Ayuso and Guthrie each scored 13 for the Sailfish as the trio did a majority of the heavy lifting offensively for PBA.

Up next, the Sailfish are scheduled to head to Daytona Beach where they will face the Embry-Riddle Eagles on Saturday. The Eagles are 5-8 on the season and 3-5 in SSC play.
