Sailfish Down Mocs In SSC Opener

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic University men's soccer team opened up Sunshine State Conference tonight with a 1-0 win over Florida Southern College. The No. 4 ranked Sailfish move to 4-0 on the season and 1-0 in SSC play with the victory.

The two sides played to a scoreless opening 45 minutes in a back in forth opening half where each side failed to manage many scoring chances. The Sailfish controlled 55 percent of the possession in the opening half but were outshot 5-3. PBA's Guillermo Falo earned his first start of the season in net for and his first career minutes with the Sailfish and was called upon to make two saves in the first half. Quenzi Huerman had the best opportunity for the 'Fish in the first half from just outside the box, as he cut back onto his left foot and dragged a shot just wide of the Mocs goal.

The Sailfish needed to create more opportunities in the second half if they wanted to keep alive their 14 match regular season unbeaten streak at home. PBA burst out of the locker room on the front foot for the opening ten minutes of the second half. The Sailfish pressure on the Mocs defense paid off in the 56th minute when Michael Pahr played a ball into striker Bicho Barquin who flicked a ball in behind the FSC backline to a streaking Huerman. The Sailfish midfielder was calm under the pressure of a one-on-one with the Mocs keeper as he slide a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner to give the 'Fish the 1-0 lead.

The Mocs came back with an offensive spell of pressure of their own for the next ten minutes but the Sailfish were able to stay sound defensively and repel eight FSC shots and seven corner kicks. In his debut, Falo finished with three saves as the Sailfish were able to control possession down the stretch to see out the game with the 1-0 victory. The Sailfish controlled 57 percent of the possession in the second half as they saw out the final minutes to the match. The two sides each recorded 13 shots on the night while PBA was able to get five of their shots on target to the Mocs three. 18 Sailfish appeared in the contest as PBA was able to keep fresh legs on the pitch while FSC made just four subs in the game.

The Sailfish get a much-needed break in their schedule after their Texas trip and beginning of SSC play tonight. Up next, the Sailfish will face Fort Lauderdale on Sep. 23 at the Rinker Athletic Campus.
