Women's Basketball Storms Back Late to Defeat Tars

WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team faced off with the Rollins College Tars this afternoon. The Sailfish added the game to the end of their regular season schedule as the date became available late this week. The Sailfish took full advantage of the opportunity to play the extra game as they used a late fourth quarter run to capture the 64-59 victory.

The Tars were playing in their first game of the season, but they jumped out to the to early first quarter league. The Sailfish had a balanced attack as six different players scored in the first quarter but the Sailfish trailed 19-12. Rollins was led by Asia Newsome off the bench who scored seven in the first quarter. The 'Fish were 4-of-12 from the floor in the opening quarter and 4-for-4 from the line.

The Sailfish struggled to take care of the ball in the second quarter as they committed eight turnovers which limited them to ten shots on offense. Fortunately the Sailfish defense held down the Tars in the quarter as they scored just 15 points on 5-of-18 shooting. Kennedi Rodgers and Gabriella Nazigian led PBA in scoring in the second quarter with three and four points as the Sailfish scored 14 and going into the half, Rollins led 34-26.

The third quarter ended up being a low-scoring affair as the Tars had a high-turnover quarter of their own with seven as they went 5-of-11 from the field and scored 14 points. Unfortunately, the Sailfish were unable to take advantage and cut into the deficit as they scored just 12 points of their own. PBA was 3-of-8 from the floor in the quarter but they were able to get to the line six times, making four. Rodgers scored another five points for the 'Fish in the quarter to keep them within striking distance. The Sailfish hadn't played a great offensive quarter yet in the game but they trailed by just 10, 48-38.

In the final 10 minutes of the game, the Sailfish offense exploded led by Avree Carpenter. She scored 16 of her game-high 21 points in the final quarter as she went 4-of-5 from the floor, 2-for-3 from three, and a perfect 6-of-6 from the line. To go along with the offensive outbreak, the Sailfish locked down Rollins, holding them to 11 points on 2-of-13 shooting in the quarter. Shekinah Guthrie also helped out Carpenter in the final quarter as she scored five of her 12 points during the Sailfish rally and added 12 rebounds as well.

The Sailfish trailed by eight with six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Sailfish would go on an extended 24-8 run to close out the game and head home with the victory. PBA was able to get to the line frequently throughout the game and they took full advantage there going 9-for-10 in the fourth quarter and 22-for-25 for the game. The Sailfish shot 40 percent from the field for the game (18-for-45) and hit six threes on 14 attempts.

Up next, the Sailfish will head to the Sunshine State Conference Tournament as they were drawn as the four seed earlier this week. PBA is slated to face Florida Tech on Tuesday at Rubin Arena. The Sailfish go into the contest with a 2-6 record while Florida Tech is 3-5 with the two sides yet to face each other earlier in the year.
