MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team was back in action tonight as they traveled south to face St. Thomas University. The Sailfish and the Bobcats played a tight contest throughout as PBA was clutch down the stretch and was able to come out on top and secure the 61-60 victory.
Both sides started out slow from the field offensively in the first quarter. The Sailfish were able to muster ten points in the opening quarter, shooting 4-of-14 from the field.
Sia Williams and
Kash Ayuso each knocked down a three to lead PBA. The Bobcats were held to just 5-of-12 shooting with the solid Sailfish defense but they were able to take advantage of their trips to the free-throw line going 5-of-6 as they led 18-10 after the first quarter of play.
After trailing early, the 'Fish got trimmed the deficit by forcing turnovers from the Bobcats. St. Thomas was forced into eight turnovers in the second half as PBA went on a 7-0 run in the second quarter to cut the Bobcats lead to one. PBA was 6-of-15 from the floor in the quarter
Jahnae Midget and
Shekinah Guthrie were each forces on the offensive end. Williams led the Sailfish with eight points at the half as PBA outscored St. Thomas 18-11 in the quarter and trailed 29-28 at the half.
Both sides played out a close third quarter as the game stayed close and in single digits throughout the night. Each side scored 15 points in the third quarter as St. Thomas kept their one-point lead. PBA was just 4-of-13 from the field but they were able to get to the offensive glass and the free-throw line in the quarter. PBA was 7-of-9 from the charity stripe as PBA continued to have a balanced attack from Williams, Guthrie, Midget, and Ayuso all having over six points through three-quarters of play.
Neither side was able to get a lead greater than five points in the second half and it seemed the game was destined to come down to the wire. With the score tied at 51, the Sailfish were able to go on a 6-2 run to go up by four with 2:30 remaining. St. Thomas hit a three the next possession and knocked down 3-of-4 free throws to take a one-point lead with 1:30 remaining. PBA had possession with 30 seconds remaining down one when they went to Guthrie. She was able to hit on a turnaround jumper to give the Sailfish a one-point lead. She was the star of the night for PBA as she finished with a huge double-double, 16 points and 14 rebounds. PBA needed one stop with 16 seconds left and that is exactly what they got as they shut down St. Thomas, holding them without a shot as
Sia Williams recorded a loose ball steal.
The Sailfish shot a game-high 46 percent in the final quarter as they the Bobcats to 5-of-16 shooting. The Sailfish had four players finish in double figures as Ayuso and Midget each finished with 11 points. Williams finished with 13 while Guthrie scored a team-high 16, with six of her 14 offensive rebounds being offensive.
The win takes the Sailfish record to 3-7 as they have one more game before they go on their Christmas break. Up next, PBA will face off with Shaw in Boca Raton on Dec. 19.
