WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach women's basketball played one of its better opponents they will face all year today when they hosted the Eckerd Tritons. The Sailfish made big runs at the end of the first quarter and in the third quarter, but came up short as they fell 78-64.
After the game began with each side trading baskets and the game tied at 4, the Tritons went on a 13-0 run to build a double-digit lead early on. Jaynae Midget and
Kash Ayuso scored five and eight points respectively in the quarter to cut the deficit to four, 19-15, after the first ten minutes of play. The Sailfish shot 6-of-22 from the field as Eckerd shot an efficient 8-of-14 from the floor.
PBA struggled from the field in the second quarter scoring ten points and shooting 3-of-14. Midget once again was the driving force of the attack in the quarter, as the freshman scored eight of her career-high 18 points. Eckerd outscored the 'Fish 18-10 in the quarter and led 37-25. The Sailfish shot 25 percent to the Triton's 57 percent in the opening half but they were able to force 11 turnovers to gain extra possessions.
PBA played its best basketball of the game in the third quarter as they ratcheted up their pressure defense in the full court and half-court. They forced six more Tritons turnovers and created a big 7-0 run a one-minute stretch to cut the deficit to five points.
Shekinah Guthrie scored seven of her 16 points in the quarter as she was a force in the paint and on the glass as she pulled down nine rebounds. With all the momentum appearing to be with the Sailfish, Eckerd closed the final 1:30 on a 7-0 run over their own to extend their lead back to 12 when the third quarter ended.
The lead never got back to single-digits again, as Eckerd was able to shoot 60 percent from the floor which made up for their 23 turnovers PBA forced. Midget, Guthrie, and Ayuso all scored in double-figures for the Sailfish as Eckerds Maya Price scored a game-high 27 points. The Sailfish finished 21-of-65 from the field against a strong Eckerd defense and shot it 8-of-23 from behind the arc. PBA didn't get its usual output from guards
Maria Benitez-Zayas and
Sia Williams as they combined to 2-of-16 from the field.
The Sailfish have a quick turnaround, as up next they travel to face Flagler College on the road. PBA defeated the Saint 77-70 at Rubin Arena earlier this season behind 22 points from
Kash Ayuso.
