Sailfish Season Ends In NCAA Tournament Against Sharks

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic men's soccer team had their season come to an end this afternoon as they fell 1-0 to the Nova Southeastern Sharks. In their sixth straight NCAA Tournament appearance, the No. 2 seeded Sailfish fell on their home field to NSU for the second time in two weeks. The Sailfish end their season with a 13-3 record.

The first half in itself was a tale of two different games as NSU came out on the front foot. Guillermo Falo came up with a big save in the eighth minute to keep the game scoreless against NSU's leading scorer Matty Cornish. His next save came in the 20th minute a loose ball found a Shark player at the edge of the box and before Falo was able to parry the shot. He made two saves in the opening half, keeping the Sharks off the board. After the two saves, the Sailfish gained the upper hand in possession and chances created.

The two speedy substitutes that PBA has deployed so often together throughout the season in Giancarlo Triulzi and Bicho Barquin came onto the field and Triulzi had a chance in the 29th minute. He got in behind the NSU defensive line and was one-on-one with the Sharks keeper, but he was unable to lift the ball high enough over the goalie Alberto Ciroi. Charlie Lewis and Quenzi Huerman followed up with shots of their own directly after but PBA failed to breakthrough. Bicho Barquin had the final chance of the half in the 35th minute but Ciroi made one of his five saves in the match as the two sides went into the break scoreless.

PBA controlled much of the ball in the second half but with the game so close, it looked like it was going to come down to who could break through first as goals would be at a premium. No shots were registered on target until in the 74th minute, the Sharks broke through first. PBA played a goal kick long downfield with NSU winning the header. One pass and a flick over the PBA backline saw Milos Christoforou in behind one-on-one with Falo. His shot beat the PBA keeper and hit off a sliding Charlie Lewis and found the back of the net. The Sailfish pushed forward, to chase a potential equalizer, but no clear chance ever came as the game ended 1-0.

Each side recorded 11 total shots and five shots on target in the match and PBA out possesed NSU 57 percent to 43. It was another spectacular season for the Sailfish, and one that they have become common to as the program who has the longest active streak of NCAA Tournament appearances in the Sunshine State Conference earned a regular-season SSC Championship and SSC Player of the Year honors this year. The 'Fish were ranked in the top-5 of the country for half of the season as they bounced back from their first defeat of the season, by winning nine straight games including wins over three ranked opponents in Lynn, Nova Southeastern, and Tampa. PBA finished the year as the highest-scoring offense in the SSC and second-best defensively is goals allowed.

The Sailfish are set to reload as they return much of the squad that made it to the NCAA Tournament this season. The 'Fish appear set to lose eight seniors which include three starters and three major pieces off the bench.
