WEST PALM BEACH Fla-Â The Palm Beach Atlantic women's soccer team fell to the Florida Panthers 2-1 in the SSC Semifinals.Â
In the first half, both teams exchanged possession in a defensive stalemate. PBA goalkeeper Madison Chiola started her second consecutive game in net. She recorded five saves for the 'Fish.Â
PBA eventually added to the scoreboard in the 25th minute. A Florida Tech handball inside the box awarded PBA a penalty kick. Sydney Timmes struck the left side of the net for a PBA 1-0 lead. For Timmes it's her fourth goal of the season which tied Kylie Meola for the team lead. Additionally, Timmes leads the team in points with eleven.Â
The Sailfish took the 1-0 lead into halftime. Florida Tech was more active offensively in the second half as they outshot PBA in the second half eight to three. The Panthers answered back for an equalizer in the 75th minute. FT forward Mayara Queiroz Reis fired off a corner kick into the header of Marem Ndiongue. Ndiongue's header tied the match at 1-1. The Panthers generated eight more corner kick opportunities than the Sailfish during the match.
PBA had opportunities down the stretch but failed to convert. After 90 minutes, the game headed to extra time. The Panthers maintained possession in the period as the Sailfish did not attempt a single shot in extra time. In the 97th minute, a Sailfish handball awarded Florida Tech a penalty kick. Queiroz Reis converted the penalty kick to end the game at 2-1.Â
For the No. 22 Sailfish (10-5, 7-4) this was their first SSC Tournament match in program history. Up next for the 'Fish they will wait to see if they clinched an NCAA Tournament birth.Â
