WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic men's soccer team won its eighth straight game tonight after taking down Florida Tech 3-1 on senior night. The Sailfish move to 12-1 overall and 8-1 in SSC play. The No. 4 ranked Sailfish sit atop the SSC standings, tied with Tampa with each having one conference game remaining.
The Sailfish faced off against a tough Florida Tech side tonight, but it didn't take long for the Sailfish to jump into the lead. The first chance fell to
Fred Ferreira who cut inside onto his right foot in the 13th minute. His shot sent the Florida Tech goalie sprawling to make the save but Ferreira's shot beat the keeper but was only denied by the crossbar. The ball fell straight down and it was
Nemanja Zivanovic who was quickest to the loose ball and had a tap in to put the Sailfish up 1-0. Zivanovic has been in good form as he has scored in two straight games and he assisted on two goals in the last match against Eckerd.
Four minutes later, Ferreira was at it again as he fired a shot on the left side of the box. He beat the Panther's keeper but was denied by the woodwork for the second time in the opening 20 minutes. The Sailfish controlled the opening half as they outshot the Panthers 5-0 in the opening half. The two sides went into the locker room with the Sailfish leading 1-0.
PBA was the team that struck first out of the locker room in the second half. After absorbing Florida tech possession early in the second half,
Andres Flores received a ball in the midfield and made a run through Florida Tech defenders and near the opposing box he layed a ball off to Zivanovic. The Sailfish forward faked a shot and dribbled around the Panther's keeper before sending a shot into an empty net to double the PBA lead and score his second goal of the night.Â
In the 59th minute, the Panther had a corner and as they crowded the Sailfish box, Mikel Kvinnesland was sent off after shoving PBA keeper
Guillermo Falo. Down a man, the Panthers cut the deficit in half on the ensuing corner as Falo missed a punch out on the corner and the ball found the back of the net. The Sailfish handled their business from that point on as they extended their lead to a comfortable 3-1 mark in the 70th minute when defender
Nicholas Oberrauch got on the end of a
Fred Ferreira corner and headed home his first goal of the year.
The Sailfish were in control throughout the match as they controlled the majority of the possession and outshot the Panthers 13-2 in the match. The No. 4 ranked Sailfish have been on fire since their lone defeat and the SSC title will come down to the final day. PBA is currently tied with Tampa for the top spot even though the Sailfish defeated the Spartans 3-0 in Tampa when they faced off head to head. Tampa will travel to Florida Tech on the final day of the season while PBA will face the Barry Buccaneers on the road on Nov. 2 in their final match of the regular season. Â
