Softball Takes Two in Second Day of FT Invitational

VIERA, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team bounced back on Saturday with two wins at the FT Invitational.

The Sailfish more than doubled their run production from the day before which led to wins over West Alabama (3-5) and West Georgia (4-4). The 'Fish pushed across seven runs in their first game with West Alabama, leading to a 7-3 win. PBA (6-3) followed with a 5-1 win over West Georgia as it was aided by a strong performance by Taylor Pennica in the circle.

Sailfish softball finishes their time in Viera, Fla. on Sunday win a morning game against Molloy College. The game against the Lions is scheduled for 10 a.m.

Game 1: PBA 7, UWA 3

The Sailfish got on the board early against the Tigers. Magnolia West's leadoff single kickstarted a rally in the top of the first. She was driven in by an RBI double by Alexis Guerra. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases for PBA with one out. They didn't stay loaded for long as a double by Edmilly Molina cleared the bases and gave the 'Fish a 4-0 lead. A sac fly by Katherine Budnovich gave the 'Fish their fifth run of the inning. UWA answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning, but PBA led 5-2 after the first frame.

The Tigers plated another run in the third inning thanks to some small ball. An infield singled and a sac bunt, set the table for an RBI single to make it a 5-3 game. After the third inning, Abbey Busby buckled down in the circle. She did not allow a run for the rest of the contest.

Although Busby did not need any insurance, the Sailfish kept the offense coming. Maddie Biggs made it 6-3 with an RBI single that scored West. PBA scored one more in the inning to make it 7-3 as it cruised to a 7-3 victory.

West, Guerra, Biggs and Molina tallied two hits each. Busby pitched seven innings and gave up three earned runs on just four hits. She finished with eight strikeouts in the game.

Game 2: PBA 5, UWG 1

The Sailfish struck early again in the first inning of game two. After leadoff walks by West and Guerra, Biggs put the 'Fish on the board with a single through the left side. Molina drove in Guerra with a groundout to make it 2-0 Sailfish.

PBA scored a second pair of runs in the next inning. Budnovich and Faith Allen got on base to start the inning and advanced to second and third thanks to a sac bunt from Liz Albertini. That set up an RBI single by West who made it 3-0. Biggs followed with her second RBI of the day to make it 4-0 PBA.

That was all the run support Pennica required as she kept the Wolves off balance the entire game. She stranded two Wolves on base in both the fourth and fifth inning to preserve the 'Fish lead.

Allen showed off her speed in the sixth inning with an infield single followed by a stolen base to put her on second with one out. She scored on West's single to left field to make it 5-0 PBA. UWG scored one run in the top of the seventh thanks to two Sailfish errors, but a diving catch by Allen in centerfield put the final nail in the coffin for UWG as PBA won 5-1.

West led the 'Fish by going 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs. Biggs finished with a pair of hits and RBIs. Pennica finished the game with no earned runs in her second career complete game. She gave up five hits and got two strikeouts.
