Florence S.C. – The Palm Beach Atlantic women's tennis team played its first match of the Spring on Saturday at the Florence City Collegiate Tournament.
The Sailfish played Mount Olive in the first round of play, and earned the win over the Jags, 4-2. PBA will move on to play Francis Marion in the second round of the tournament at 11 a.m.
The team of
Yuliia Russu and
Shelby Groeneveld finished first on the No. 1 doubles court. They defeated the opposing Lina Alarcon and Liza Voloshyna, 6-3. Mount Olive earned the win on No. 3 doubles to match the 'Fish. The match at No. 2 doubles was the deciding match to see who clinched the doubles point.
Elvira Edstrom and
Verena Weindl held on to win 6-4 to earned the crucial doubles point for the 'Fish.
PBA picked up right where it left off when it started singles play. Groeneveld earned the win on court one, 6-3, 6-4, but the Trojans answered with a win at the No. 2 spot. UMO held a one-point advantage after another win at No. 4 singles; however, the Sailfish bounced back.
Anabelle Robichaud defeated Arianna Orozco 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 5 position to tie the match.
Estefani Fernandez held on to win a tough 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 victory at the No. six spot to win the match for PBA.
If the Sailfish win their match against Francis Marion tomorrow, they will play the winner of Barton and Newberry at 2 p.m.
