Softball Drops Doubleheader at Saint Leo

ST. LEO, FLA – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team wrapped up its series at No. 17 Saint Leo on Saturday with a doubleheader.

After winning the first game of the series on Friday, the Sailfish dropped both games to the Lions on Saturday. PBA's offense struggled in game one as SLU (13-6, 3-3 SSC) won 2-1. The Sailfish took an early lead in the second game, but were unable to build on it, losing 5-2 in game two.

PBA (12-9, 5-4 SSC) travels to Pensacola, Fla. on Tuesday for a doubleheader against West Florida. The first pitch of game one starts at 1 p.m.

GAME 1: Saint Leo 2, PBA 1

The Sailfish started the game with two runners on in the top of the first with Edmilly Molina at the plate, but PBA came up empty. The 'Fish had another opportunity in the second with a leadoff single, but they stranded the runner again.

Saint Leo was the first to get on the board in game one. A 2-run home run to centerfield gave the Lions a 2-0 lead in the third inning. That was just about the only miscue Katherine Budnovich made in the contest as she did not surrender another run in the contest.

PBA had a chance to respond in the top of the sixth with the first two runners reaching base. Molina got the first out of the inning by being called for being out of the box. Budnovich helped her own cause with a bunt single which caused a Saint Leo throwing error which scored Alexis Guerra. PBA had a chance to do more damage in the inning, but the inning ended with the Fish trailing 2-1. PBA went down quietly in the seventh inning, to end the game.

The 'Fish totaled three hits in the game. Budnovich finished with six innings pitched, giving up two runs on six hits. She tallied six strikeouts and gave up two walks.

GAME 2: Saint Leo 5, PBA 2

PBA wasted little time getting on the board in game one. Budnovich hit an RBI-double to right center to plate Maddie Biggs and give the 'Fish a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Unfortunately for the 'Fish, they did not hold the lead for long as Saint Leo plated three runs on three hits in the bottom of the frame.

Magnolia West singled up the middle to start the third, but PBA was unable to drive her in after she stole second base. The Lions pushed two more runs across in the third inning with three hits in the inning to take a 5-1 lead.

The Sailfish got two runners on in the seventh thanks to two Saint Leo errors. Guerra drove in West to make it 5-2, but it was too little too late for the Sailfish as they dropped the game.

West led PBA with two hits in the game. Abbey Busby relieved Taylor Pennica in the circle, tossing six innings with three hits and two earned runs.
