Softball Drops Doubleheader to No. 12 North Georgia

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team returned home to face No. 12-ranked North Georgia in a Sunday matinee doubleheader at Simpson Field.

The four-game winning streak of the Sailfish was snapped by the Nighthawks who took advantage of some shoddy PBA (11-7, 4-2 SSC) defense in game one to win 11-3. UNG's Kylee Smith followed with an excellent performance in the circle in game two. She held the 'Fish to one hit as UNG (16-2, 0-0 PBC) defeated PBA 2-0 to complete the two-game sweep.

The Sailfish resume their Sunshine State Conference schedule this coming weekend with a three-game series at Saint Leo. The first pitch of Friday's game in St. Leo, Fla. is scheduled to take place at 7 p.m.

Game 1: No. 12 UNG 11, PBA 3

A solo home run kicked off a six-run inning for the Nighthawks. UNG plated six runs in the inning thanks to five hits and two Sailfish errors. The visitors continued to pile on in the third inning with two more runs scoring thanks to three hits and four defensive miscues by PBA to make it 8-0.

The Sailfish got on the board in the bottom of the third. Three consecutive singles started the inning followed by a sacrifice fly by Maddie Biggs that plated the first run of the game for PBA. An error by the Nighthawks allowed Magnolia West and Alexis Guerra to score to make it 8-3.

UNG snatched the momentum back in the top of the fourth. Three hits and an error allowed the Nighthawks to score three more runs to make it 11-3. PBA was held scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings which allowed UNG to win the game 11-3 in five innings.

The Sailfish totaled four hits and a walk in the first game. Taylor Pennica pitched five innings in the circle allowing seven earned runs on 13 hits.

Game 2: No. 12 UNG 2, PBA 0

The Sailfish looked to bounced back in game two, but they faced a tough opponent in the form of Smith in the circle. UNG struck first in the top of the second with two runs thanks to a hit batter, a double and a two-RBI single. That was all the Nighthawks scored in the game, but that was all the run support they needed.

The Sailfish were held to just one hit in the ballgame. Their best chance to score came in the top of the fourth. PBA had runners on second and third with one out after Guerra was hit by a pitch and Biggs doubled. Back-to-back strikeouts ended the Sailfish rally as PBA came up empty.

Abbey Busby turned in another strong performance in the circle for PBA. She allowed two runs in seven innings with three strikeouts.
