Sailfish Sink Against Buccaneers

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team went on the road to face Sunshine State Conference opponent Barry tonight. The Sailfish were unable to take advantage of their opportunities around the basket and ultimately fell 54-42. They fall to 3-19 on the season while the win takes the Buccaneers to 7-15.

The Sailfish were not able to get many clean looks against a tight Barry defense early as the 'Fish scored just seven points in the opening quarter going 3-of-14 from the floor. Coach Manisha Redus went deep into the bench early looking for a combination that could crack the Barry defense as 11 players saw the court for the Sailfish in the first 10 minutes. Defensively, the Sailfish were solid but surrendered nine offensive rebounds in the first half giving the Buccaneers ten second-chance points. The Bucs were 7-of-20 from the field in the first quarter and led 14-7.

The 'Fish bounced back in the second quarter outscoring Barry 13-9. Sailfish leading scorers Sia Williams and Avree Carpenter each scored five in the first half as PBA was able to drive and get to the free-throw line where they were 5-for-8 in the quarter. Neither team was able to knock down open shots as the 'Fish were 5-of-20 inside the paint in the first half while Barry was 0-of-10 from three.

Barry came out for the second half on a quick 6-0 run that forced a Manisha Redus timeout. From that point on, Claire Bady became the focal point of the Sailfish offense scoring six of the Sailfish 14 points in the quarter on 3-of-4 shooting. While she was productive on the offensive end, she also held down Barry's leading scorer Harriet Swindells to ten points in the contest. Despite the boost in intensity, the Sailfish were never able to muster enough offense to take the lead from the Buccaneers. After a Bady layup cut the deficit to three points with 13 minutes remaining, the Sailfish were outscored 21-9. The 'Fish had two different three-plus minute scoring droughts in the fourth quarter as Barry's Emma Hergot led all scorers with 12 points.

The Bucs finished with three players in double figures while the 'Fish had Sia Williams lead the way with 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the charity stripe. Claire Bady played a strong second half on both ends and was the other Sailfish member to reach double figures with ten points. PBA finished the game shooting just 24 percent for the game, 15-of-62, and 1-of 15 from three. The Sailfish were able to win the rebounding battle as well as the turnover battle, but the lack of shot-making, particularly inside the paint where they shot 10-of-34, was their downfall. Barry finished the game shooting 36 percent, but were just 3-of-23 from downtown.

The Sailfish will look to bounce back at home this Saturday when they host Saint Leo at Rubin Arena. The Lions won the previous matchup 76-52 at Saint Leo.
