LAKELAND, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic University men's soccer team was held to a 1-1 draw on Saturday at Florida Southern College. A second-half goal from PBA tied the game 1-1, but in overtime they were unable to find the winning goal.
The Sailfish entered their first Sunshine State Conference game of the season with a 4-0 record and ranked No. 6 in the country against a 1-2-1 Florida Southern College team. Both teams struggled to gain any meaningful possession or chances in the opening minutes of the game. The first shot on target didn't come until the 26th minute when a long range FSC shot was easily saved by
Elliott Barker. The Moccasins were looking to play direct with long balls into their forwards, and the Sailfish backline handled it well until in the 44th minute Moccasin substitute Jacob Ling-Vannerus got behind the PBA defense. A right-footed shot from just inside the right side of the box beat Barker to give the Mocs the lead right before the half.
After mustering just three shots in the first half, the Sailfish controlled more of the possession in the second half. However, the first good chance came to FSC's Mason Comer, but
Elliott Barker made one of his four saves to keep the 'Fish in the game. In the 74th minute, PBA broke through when a left-footed
Gian Scalise free-kick found substitute defender
Charlie Lewis whose header beat FSC keeper Phillip Faderl. After gaining momentum, four minutes later a
Claudio Rivadeneira cross found
Cadu Cusatis but his header was right at Faderl.
In overtime, the Sailfish dictated the play but the Mocs were able to do enough defensively to keep PBA out. The major chance came in the final seconds of the first overtime period when a
Claudio Rivadeneira shot was cleared off the line by a FSC defender. Both teams recorded 13 shots in the game but there were only a combined eight shots on target.
The Sailfish will look to get back to their winning ways Sept. 25 when they host Flagler College at 7 p.m.
