First-half Tally Gives Women’s Soccer Victory against Mars Hill

MARS HILL, N.C.—The Sailfish women's soccer team bounced back after its initial loss of the season, earning a 1-0 triumph over the Mars Hill University Lions Sunday afternoon.

Early in the match, both teams struggled to take the upper hand, as the squads traded possession in the midfield; however, PBA settled down and began to control the tempo just 15 minutes into the game.

The Sailfish then got on the board in the 21st minute thanks to the top returning scorer from a year ago. Following a failed clearance attempt by Mars Hill, Karina Williams made the Lions pay by lobbing a shot over the keeper from 30 yards out.

After breaking through midway into the first half, PBA continued to manufacture chances as the team looked to increase its lead.

Palm Beach Atlantic pressured the MHU defense with constant possession by keeping the Lions hemmed into their defensive half. This strategic offense led to a plethora of chances, including a goal that was called back for offside just before the halftime break.

With the opportunities, the Sailfish produced four shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes, while keeping Mars Hill off the scoresheet in the category.

PBA dominated possession in the second half, just as it did late in the first period. The Sailfish added five shots before the hydration break with 22 minutes to go.

The Lions were finally able to record their first shot on target in the 75th minute, but the effort was stymied by a diving Madison Chiola. Chiola's only save of the competition proved valuable as it preserved the 1-0 shutout victory for the 'Fish.

Overall, the Sailfish sent 18 shots toward MHU's goal, compared to allowing only eight attempts in the dominating performance.

Palm Beach Atlantic will be back on the pitch when the squad plays St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens on Wednesday. The match is currently scheduled for 7 p.m.
