Sailfish Drop a Close One Despite Big Game From Cumbie

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team played their second game of the season this morning in as many days against Central State. The Sailfish dropped a hard-fought game against the Marauders by a score of 62-56.

Both teams came into today's game with a 0-1 record after dropping their first games yesterday in Boca Raton. The Sailfish got off to a strong start defensively holding Central to ten points in the first quarter. Both teams struggled with turnovers in the first half and defending without fouling, but the Sailfish were able to shoot 60 percent from the field in the first quarter which led to a 15-10 lead. The Sailfish struggled with turnovers throughout the contest committing a total of 26, and Central held PBA to just one field goal in the second quarter. Ciara Cumbie led PBA with ten points in the first half, and the two teams went to the half with the 'Fish trailing 28-25.

Cumbie continued her aggressive play in the second half, controlling the boards on both ends. She finished the game with an 18 point and 14 rebound double-double. The third quarter turned into a free-throw shooting contest with all of the whistles. The Sailfish shot 7-of-11 at the line in the quarter and were 19-of-29 for the game while the Marauders were 12-of-15 in the quarter and 27-of-38 overall.

In a defensive battle, the Sailfish trailed by two heading to the fourth quarter. Guards Sia Williams and Avree Carpenter were able to join Cumbie scoring in double figures with 15 and 12 points respectively. In a game that had 12 lead changes and was tight throughout, the Marauders were able to do just enough to hold onto the lead late. Both teams struggled from behind the arc shooting 3-of-16, but Central was able to convert on 8-of-11 free throws in the fourth quarter to secure the game.

Up next, the Sailfish will come home for their home opener at Rubin Arena as they face St. Thomas on Nov.12 at 5:30 p.m. The two teams haven't met since 2011 when the Sailfish came out on top 64-60.
