MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The women's soccer team fell in the final game of the regular season to the Barry University Buccaneers Tuesday night. With the defeat, the Sailfish ended the regular season with an 8-8 (3-7 SSC) record and nine points in Sunshine State Conference play.
For the majority of the first half, Barry controlled possession by keeping Palm Beach Atlantic pinned in the defensive part of the field; however, PBA still created a couple of opportunities against the run of play.
The Sailfish were unable to put either of their chances in the opening 45 minutes on frame despite working the ball through the midfield and connecting into the attacking third on multiple occasions.
Madison Chiola kept out four Barry shots in the first half, including a diving save to her right, as the match remained scoreless going into the break.
BU (9-6, 8-2 SSC) out-shot PBA 7-2 in the half, creating four corners while the Sailfish were held without one.
Early in the second frame, Chiola continued where she left off in the first period, extending to add three more impressive saves in the opening 10 minutes.
Palm Beach Atlantic then registered a couple more opportunities from the feet of usual suspects.
Karina Williams, the PBA player with the second-most points on the team (14), launched a long attempt that flew just over the bar in the 59th minute, while Kylee Rullo, who leads the team in goals (7), assists (4) and points (18), cut into the middle of the field only two minutes after Williams' chance to fire a shot that was handled by the Bucs' keeper.
Rullo then made a similar run in the 73rd minute looking to break the deadlock, but her blast from the top of the penalty area was saved to preserve the scoreless match heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
Barry utilized a strike from just outside the box that found the upper left corner of the net in the 83rd minute to go up 1-0.
Despite a phenomenal nine-save performance by Chiola, the Sailfish couldn't put away a late equalizer to keep their hopes in the contest alive.
BU, who out-shot PBA 18-8 in the competition, notched its sixth shutout in the last seven games and won its eighth consecutive match with the 1-0 victory.
Palm Beach Atlantic concluded the regular season with at least a .500 record for the second straight year.
