WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic University men's soccer team closed out their regular season with a 4-1 victory against defending National Champions Barry tonight. The win moves the No. 7 ranked Sailfish to 12-2-2 and 6-2-2 in conference play.
With the victory tonight, the Sailfish winning streak moves to five games in a row, including two wins against ranked opponents, where they are outscoring opponents 19-4. Palm Beach Atlantic was able to shine on a big stage tonight as its match against Barry was selected as an NCAA DII Showcase match. The 'Fish controlled the early play, dominating possession against the Buccaneers. In the 28th minute,
Claudio Rivadeneira played a ball to
Harun Velic in the box who was able to turn his defender and beat Barry keeper Mirko Ronchi. Two minutes before the half,
Jack Burrows received a ball at the top of the box and was able to beat his defender 1-on-1 and tuck his left-footed shot into the right corner for a 2-0 lead. The depth of the Sailfish was on display as both goals were scored by players who came on as substitutes.
PBA outshot Barry 7-2 in the first half and the field appeared to be tilting towards the Barry goal at the beginning of the second half as well.
Guillermo Deal was able to turn quickly off of a
Cadu Cusatis pass and shoot at the top of the box. His shot found the right corner of the net and gave the Sailfish a 3-0 lead. Barry was able to answer quickly in the 75th minute off a set-piece while applying late pressure, but Sailfish keeper
Patrick Nettekoven recorded five of his six saves in the second half to keep the Bucs at bay. PBA stayed attacking throughout the second half and it lead to
Jack Burrows added his second goal of the game late to end the game and give PBA the 4-1 win.
The Sailfish controlled over 60 percent of the possession in the contest and outshot the Buccaneers 19-9. Up next for PBA is the Sunshine Conference Tournament. With results still to be decided, the 'Fish will either host a game next week on Monday or Thursday against an opponent to be determined.  Â
